Salizzole combines the landscape of the Veronese Lowlands with an unusually rich local history. The municipality lies between the Tartaro and Menago rivers. If, for your trip, you want to place not just a single landmark but the historical character of a place in context, you will find several clearly distinct points of reference here: medieval traditions, church and fortress remains, as well as events held in the squares and public spaces of the town.

Landscape and Early Local History

The settlement history of Salizzole begins after the year 1000. The village is first mentioned in a document issued by Emperor Conrad III in 1144. This means that the development of the town can be traced not only through visible buildings, but also through its documented written history.

Historically, Salizzole is also connected with Donna Verde of the Salizzoli family. She was the wife of Alberto della Scala and the mother of Cangrande. This connection is one of the town’s distinctive historical associations and adds a specific personality to its broader local history.

Castello and Church as Historical Points of Reference

The earliest documentary mention of the Castello di Salizzole, dating from 1390, describes a property with two towers. The Castello di Salizzole is recorded as a rural fortress; despite the changes that followed its sack in 1441, significant traces remain. When exploring the town, therefore, it is important to consider not only the original function of the complex, but also the visible historical changes it has undergone over time.

The Church of San Martino is documented as early as the 12th century. Its subsequent history can be pinpointed by an exact date: the church and its high altar were consecrated on April 4, 1517. The Biblioteca comunale G. Beltramini di Salizzole is also located in the Castello Scaligero. The church, fortress and library each represent a different approach to the history of Salizzole, without requiring you to reduce the town to just one historical period.

Festivals, Theatre and a Local Cycling Route

Several events make Piazza Castello an important setting for public life. The Sagra di Santa Eurosia and the Mostra mercato dell’Artigianato take place there around the first Sunday in June, from Friday through the following Tuesday. During Ferragosto week, the Grande Festa No-Yes is also held in Piazza Castello.

The “Teatro alla Corte di Donna Verde” stages performances in courtyards, villas and public spaces in Salizzole. The edition running from June 26 to July 31 takes place in the main town and the hamlets of Salizzole. For your travel planning, this means that the event period is particularly important, while the performance venue may vary depending on the event.

Cycling is also represented by a specific local route. The Vicenza–Bionde bicycle race follows a circuit that passes eight times through Bionde, Valmorsel and Salizzole before returning to Bionde. The finish is in Bionde di Salizzole (VR). Here, the town appears not merely as a name in a race title, but as part of a circuit ridden repeatedly, with a clearly specified finish.
