Soave combines a fortified medieval complex with historic churches, named routes and the wine culture of the Soave region. When choosing accommodation in Soave, you can tailor your stay around different focal points: the history of the town, a guided tour, paths through the wine landscape or culinary experiences.

The Castello di Soave and its history

The Castello di Soave is a medieval military complex with a central keep, three courtyards and a small hanging courtyard. Its fortified origins probably date back to the beginning of the 10th century. Cansignorio restored the Castello di Soave in 1369; in 1375, he reinforced it by constructing the large ring wall around the town. The complex can therefore be viewed both as an individual historic building and in the context of Soave’s fortifications.

Guided tours of the Castello di Soave are available by prior reservation. From the town centre, you can reach the complex on foot via Via Castello Scaligero, which begins at Piazza dell’Antenna.

Churches with different historical layers

The religious buildings also give Soave a clearly distinctive historical profile. The Chiesa di San Giorgio dates from the second half of the 12th century. The Chiesa di Santa Maria di Monte Santo dei Padri Domenicani, on the other hand, was built in the second half of the 15th century. During its restoration, frescoes bearing the dates 1474, 1492 and 1502 were uncovered.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria di Monte Santo dei Padri Domenicani is no longer used for worship and hosts cultural and artistic events. As a result, it forms part of a different visitor context from a church used exclusively for liturgical purposes: In addition to its architectural and fresco history, its present-day use is also part of how the site should be understood.

Wine routes, paths and local tradition

The Strada del Vino Soave offers routes on foot, by car or by bicycle. There are also culinary tours with guided visits and tastings at wineries. Along the approximately 50-kilometre-long Strada del Vino Soave, you can visit wineries, taste wine and try typical local dishes. The approximate length describes the extent of this wine route, not the distance between accommodation and an individual attraction.

For orientation along named routes, there are also two different itineraries. The “Il borgo di Soave tra storia e paesaggi” route begins and ends in Soave. The “Il Giro dei Capitelli e la Strada del Vino” route begins in Soave and ends beyond the Castello di Soave. The Festa dell’Uva di Soave was established in 1929 on the initiative of Dr Zannini, the then president of the Cantina Sociale di Soave. At the Festa dell’Uva di Soave, you can taste Soave wine on the third weekend of the month in the medieval town centre and immerse yourself in the aromas and flavours of the local tradition.

As additional destinations for your travel planning, you can also consider Braga, Avesa, Buttapietra, Selva Di Progno, Pedemonte, Torri Del Benaco and Lazise.
