Arsiero is shaped by an unusually diverse history. Its historic sites include a church, a military cemetery and fortifications.

Landscape and trails around Arsiero

The area around Arsiero is predominantly mountainous. The deep, densely vegetated valleys shape the surrounding landscape. Numerous walks and hikes are possible both on the valley floor and in the surrounding mountains. The Pista ciclopedonale ex ferrovia is a walk suitable for everyone in Arsiero.

Among the historically significant trails is the Strada degli Alpini, marked as route 540. It was built in 1909 by Alpini troops on the western slope of Monte Cimone and originated in the period leading up to the First World War. For orientation on another route, one explicit restriction is important: the Strada dell’Aralta may not be used by unauthorised motor vehicles.

Church and Military Cemetery

The Church of San Michele Arcangelo was built within the walls of Arsiero Castle; records of it date back to the 13th century. Inside, the church preserves the altarpiece “L’apparizione di San Michele Arcangelo” by Albano Tomaselli. This means that visitors can discover both the church’s long-documented history and a specifically named work of art at this site.

The military cemetery of Arsiero is located on elevated ground and is connected to the municipal cemetery by a broad marble staircase. Its monumental entrance consists of three arches crowned by slender pinnacles. Beneath the monument rest 403 Italian and 726 Austrian unknown soldiers. The site is therefore described not only through its location and design, but also through its precise historical dimension.

Forte Campomolon and Forte Casa Ratti

The fortifications also give the surrounding area a clear historical focus. Forte Campomolon was built from 1912 onwards, shortly before the First World War. Today, Forte Campomolon is a viewpoint; from there, the view extends over Tonezza, the Altipiani, Vigolana, Valdastico, the Posina valley and the plain.

Forte Casa Ratti was built between 1906 and 1908 as a fortified battery at an altitude of 350 metres. The installation was intended to control movements from the upper Val d’Astico. On 25 June, Forte Casa Ratti was blown up and turned into a ruin. Those who choose Arsiero for its specific historic sites will therefore find two differently documented fortifications: Forte Campomolon with its viewpoint and Forte Casa Ratti with its function as a battery and its present-day ruined state.

Further places for orientation
