Tonezza Del Cimone combines trails across the Tonezza Plateau with First World War memorial sites, regional culture and seasonal outdoor activities. Your options include short loop trails as well as longer routes via Monte Cimone. There is also an ethnographic museum, mountain bike trails and winter sports facilities.

Loop Trails and Routes across the Plateau

The approximately 2.5-kilometre-long Sentiero Excalibur is a loop trail with ten stations for educational and recreational activities. The terrain is generally gentle and typical of a plateau, with no technical difficulties. The trail combines an experience of nature with informative stations without requiring a longer route.

Another route option is Sentiero No. 547. It connects the centre of Tonezza del Cimone with Monte Cimone and passes through beech forests and sites of natural and historical interest. Together with trails 536 and 539, it can be combined into a loop that starts and ends in Tonezza. This allows you to choose between a short themed loop and a connected route without equating the individual trails.

History and Local Culture

With its ossuary and numerous trails commemorating the First World War, Tonezza del Cimone is a stop on the Alta Via della Grande Guerra (AVGG) project. A particularly tangible memorial site is the Sacrario Militare del Monte Cimone at an altitude of 1,226 metres. It was inaugurated on 28 September 1929 and preserves the remains of 1,210 unknown Italian soldiers who fell in the First World War.

The “Caselo dei Grotti” Ethnographic Museum is located at Contrada Grotti 1/a, 36040 Tonezza del Cimone (VI). The multimedia exhibition presents the processing of milk and meat, a traditional kitchen, a parents’ bedroom, as well as agricultural and forestry tools. The museum is housed in the last communal caselo turnario on the Tonezza Plateau; it therefore also represents the local milk and cheese-making tradition.

Further Activities and Regional Speciality

In winter, downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are available on the Tonezza Plateau and in Tonezza del Cimone. During the warmer months, there are mountain bike trails for different preferences and fitness levels. Another nature trail, La Valle dei ciliegi, runs for approximately 2.5 kilometres as an educational loop through the heart of the Tonezza Plateau.

The local cuisine includes Patona di Tonezza del Cimone, a De.Co. dish. The rustic polenta is prepared with potatoes and flour and enhanced with an onion soffritto and pork cracklings.
