Cartigliano: Church, Brenta Floodplain and Trails
Accommodation in Cartigliano
Cartigliano combines cultural history with the landscape of the Brenta floodplain. This gives you different focuses for your stay: you can explore the parish church and Villa Morosini Cappello, visit Parco Faunistico Cappeller with its animal and plant life, or choose flat paths along embankments, through woodland and beside the river.
Culture and local history
A central cultural landmark is the parish church of Chiesa dei Santi Simone e Giuda. It dates from the late 15th to the early 17th century and houses works by Jacopo Bassano. The church interior thus combines its historical period of origin with a specific collection of artworks.
Villa Morosini Cappello is also part of Cartigliano’s townscape. It is attributed to the architect Zamberlan. The Centro di Cultura is located in the villa’s Casa del Custode. Free educational events are held there on Friday mornings from October to April. In addition, throughout the year Cartigliano’s Pro Loco organizes events including the Sagra di Sant’Osvaldo.
Brenta floodplain and flat trails
Le Basse del Brenta lies somewhat south of the centre of Cartigliano in the Brenta floodplain. The area includes wetlands, meadows, woods and old river bends. A flat path leads through the woodland to the banks of the Brenta River and is suitable for all age groups. The main access to Le Basse del Brenta is in Cartigliano near Via delle Industrie.
For a clearly defined circular route, the Percorso nel Cuore della Brenta is a good choice. The circular trail is 3.8 kilometres long and follows embankments and crosses the floodplain on an entirely flat route. Access is from the car park at Via delle Industrie 119. The paths are easy for wheelchair users and parents with pushchairs to navigate, distinguishing this section from the other natural areas through its explicitly described route and accessibility.
The landscape also includes the Brenta river ecosystem. This refers to the river’s aquatic habitat and the aquatic plants and animals living there. The floodplain is therefore shaped not only by its paths and visible landscape features, but also by the habitat in the river.
Wildlife, museum and botanical garden
Parco Faunistico Cappeller is a zoological garden with hundreds of animal species. It also includes a botanical garden with more than 500 species of trees and woody plants. The Museo Cappeller is also located in the park. An admission ticket to the park must be purchased in advance to visit the museum. This rule distinguishes a museum visit from an independent visit to a single exhibition room: admission to the park is a prerequisite.
