Bertigo is a starting point for paths that connect the landscape with the history of the plateau. Around the Contrada Bertigo, several routes lead to Monte Valbella, Cima Valbella, and other historically significant places. If you are planning your trip independently, you will find various options here: a loop trail with a GPX track, a 13-kilometre hike, shorter paths to a mountain hut, and a mountain biking route.

Hiking Routes with a Historical Focus

The B1 route | Cima Ekar – Monte Valbella – Bertigo – Turcio reaches the Contrada Bertigo after the Cippo Niccolai. It passes through places affected by the Battle of the Three Mountains. This route is recommended from May to October, provided there is no snow. As a loop trail, it is also available as a GPX track, supporting independent navigation along the designated route.

Another option is the route “Il Sacrario Militare e la Calà del Sasso”. It passes through the Contrada Bertigo, is 13 km long, and includes numerous places connected with the First World War and, in particular, the Battle of the Three Mountains. The trail runs through forests and meadows, thereby combining historic sites with a varied landscape.

Monte Valbella, Memorial Sites, and Views

The excursion to Cima Valbella and the Monumento ai Bersaglieri leads to the monument to Captain Eugenio Niccolai in Località Melaghetto. Its route passes through the Contrada Bertigo, by the Sciovie di Valbella, and onwards to the Contrada Laben. The summit of Monte Valbella also features a sacred area with a memorial stone, an altar, and a cross commemorating the Bersaglieri who fell in these mountains.

The B1 route offers a viewpoint near the huge yellow bench in front of Malga Campocostalunga, with views across the central plateau. This specific viewpoint complements the historic sites with a place where the plateau’s landscape can be experienced directly.

Shorter Paths and a Mountain Biking Route

For a shorter outing, a path leads from Bertigo to Malga Ronco di Carbon. Optionally, it can be continued along a short unpaved road to Casara Stenfle. The route thus identifies both a shorter destination and a possible extension, without requiring both sections to be treated in the same way.

The surrounding area can also be explored by mountain bike on a documented route: the route from Asiago to the Astronomical Observatory uses the unpaved Via Tilman and reaches a paved road near Località Bertigo. The Via Tilman route follows the path taken by Major H. W. Tilman on his way to his command post during the war. Alpine ski runs also extend along the slopes of the Cima Ekar area.
