Caldogno combines architectural history, unusual cultural sites, a section of a cycle route and local traditions. If, on your journey through Veneto, you want to consider not only a single main destination but also the different facets of a place, you will find several clearly distinguishable points of interest here: Villa Caldogno with its historic rooms, the bunker with its current cultural use, Cresole with the Church of Sant'Urbano, and a festival in April focusing on regional culinary traditions.

Villa Caldogno and the tour of the country estate

Villa Caldogno was built around 1565 as a country estate for Angelo Caldogno, based on a design by Andrea Palladio. The villa is a specific place where you can trace its architectural and construction history in connection with Angelo Caldogno and Andrea Palladio.

The complex is open for visits year-round. The self-guided visit includes the garden, the piano nobile, the basement with its Palladian hydraulic system and the German bunker dating from 1943. This allows the visit to be combined into a self-guided tour through several different areas, without grouping the individual elements into a single historical period.

The bunker as a place of history and the present

The bunker in Caldogno is a reinforced-concrete bunker built six metres below the level of the surrounding terrain. Its original layout included rooms for the sick and wounded as well as operating theatres. Today, the bunker hosts youth projects related to art and culture. In terms of choosing experiences, this gives the site a particular breadth of content: here you encounter both a built historical record with a clearly described function and a current use that connects the site with artistic and cultural projects.

Cresole: church, parish and cycle route

The district of Cresole is connected with several of Caldogno's documented points of interest. The Church of Sant'Urbano in Cresole has existed since at least the 12th century. The Parish of Sant'Urbano in Cresole was established in 1444. These two details refer to different historical levels: the church dates back at least to the Middle Ages, while the establishment of the parish is dated to 1444.

Cresole is also a specific reference point for getting around by bicycle. The first section of the cycle route was completed entirely within the municipality of Caldogno in 2021 and extends as far as the district of Cresole. Thus, both the date of completion and the documented route within the municipality are recorded for this section.

Local cuisine at the festival in April

Another side of the town can be seen at the Festa della Trota alla cresolana. It takes place in April in Cresole and Rettorgole di Caldogno. The focus is on rainbow trout, which is grilled by parish volunteers and prepared with a coating made from nine aromatic herbs typical of the region. The festival therefore offers a clearly defined local occasion in which the preparation is as characteristic as the product used.

Other places to help you plan your trip

If you would like to consider other places within the available selection in addition to Caldogno, you can also look at Belvedere (Belvedere), Lovolo (Lovolo), Enego (Enego), Arzignano (Arzignano), Arcugnano (Arcugnano), San Benedetto (San Benedetto), Cagnano (Cagnano) and Tezze Sul Brenta (Tezze Sul Brenta) .
