Historic Lonigo between Theatre and Architectural Heritage

The documented historical traces in Lonigo extend from the 10th century to the 19th-century Teatro comunale Giuseppe Verdi. In between are Renaissance and Baroque buildings, a listed park, the River Guà and long-standing festival traditions. If you want to understand a place through clear cultural points of reference, Lonigo can be explored above all through its buildings, green spaces and historical development.

The Teatro comunale Giuseppe Verdi was inaugurated on 23 October 1892 and is considered the only historic 19th-century theatre in the Province of Vicenza. The interior also has a distinctive character: the foyer is decorated with wood in pink, olive green and cream, suggesting a Liberty-style influence. Thus, the theatre's distinctive character lies not only in its year of construction but also in the design of its foyer.

Churches, Villas and the Renaissance

The Chiesa Vecchia brings together several construction phases. Its façade was completely rebuilt in 1543 and later expanded at the beginning of the 17th century and during the first half of the 18th century. The bell tower dates from the 18th century; its peal of nine bells was restored in 1988/89. Inside, the church preserves its Baroque altars intact and in their original locations. A single building therefore reveals both its architectural development and its preserved decorative details.

Another historic point of reference is La Rocca Pisana. It was designed in 1576 by Vincenzo Scamozzi in the Palladian style, stands on a hill and has a harmonious relationship with the surrounding landscape. Villa Pisani Bonetti was built between 1544 and 1545. Palazzo Pisani was commissioned by the Pisani brothers and built in 1556 on existing structures.

Villa San Fermo also dates back a long way. Its history began in the 10th century, when a community of Benedictine monks from San Benedetto di Polirone near Mantua settled there and built an abbey and the Church of San Fermo e Rustico. The villa is located on a hill in the municipality of Lonigo, about 500 metres from the town centre; after a short climb, you reach the entrance to the villa.

Green Spaces and Local Traditions

Parco Ippodromo is a listed green area covering approximately 44,000 square metres. Its playground is also accessible to people with disabilities via Via Cesare Battisti. The park thus complements the historic buildings with a public space of its own. The River Guà also runs through Lonigo. The Fiera di Lonigo has its ancient origins in the popular and religious traditions of the Basso Vicentino.
