Discover Sossano: Culture and History
Accommodation in Sossano
Those considering Sossano as a travel destination can explore its cultural history and outdoor activities through a range of themes. The Chiesetta dell’Olmo, the parish church of San Michele Arcangelo and Villa Loschi Gazzetta represent different architectural and artistic highlights; the Museo Civico “Storia - Memoria” adds historical and everyday-life collections to the picture. North of the built-up town centre lies the Monte della Croce excursion and hiking area. The GB1 route extends beyond Sossano, passing through seven municipalities in the Basso Vicentino. This distinguishes the specific cultural sites in town from the region-wide perspective of the route.
Culture, Architecture and Art
The Chiesetta dell’Olmo, also known as Beata Vergine dell’Aiuto, has an octagonal structure and a centralised floor plan. Giorgio Massari had the chapel built in its present form between 1727 and 1734. The term “centralised floor plan” describes a layout organised around a central point; together with the octagonal shape, it makes the building’s design immediately clear. The parish church of San Michele Arcangelo makes a different impression. Designed by Sebastiano Bazzetta, it was completed and consecrated in 1882 and is in the Neo-Palladian style. Inside the church is a stone shrine containing the Cristo morto, a work by Niccolò da Venezia. The comparison is therefore about more than two building forms: the chapel is characterised by its floor plan and octagonal shape, while the parish church is also distinguished by its shrine and architectural style.
At Villa Loschi Gazzetta, the focus is on a single architectural feature. It preserves a central bifora window from the early Renaissance, decorated with oak leaves and bees. A bifora is a two-part window divided by a central support. Villa Loschi Gazzetta is open to visitors during the activities, events and celebrations held there.
Museum: Memory, Rural Life and Ham Production
The Museo Civico “Storia - Memoria” in Colloredo di Sossano contains around 600 objects across two subject areas. One brings together documents and memorabilia from the First and Second World Wars; the other displays numerous objects relating to traditional rural life in the Basso Vicentino. In this way, wartime documents and memorabilia sit alongside objects from everyday rural life—two different perspectives within the same collection.
Another connection to the town’s history is the renowned S. Michele di Sossano ham factory. Exhibits relating to the factory’s origins include a bas-relief depicting the ham production cycle, a counter with ham presses and the well-known ham basket. The relief portrays the production cycle; the presses and basket complement the theme with tangible exhibits. This places ham production as a distinct part of the museum’s content, alongside wartime and everyday history.
Hiking Area and Regional Orientation
Monte della Croce is an excursion and hiking area north of Sossano’s built-up town centre. The GB1 route covers a wider area: it passes through seven municipalities in the Basso Vicentino, including Campiglia dei Berici, Sossano, Orgiano, Asigliano Veneto, Pojana Maggiore, Noventa Vicentina and Agugliaro. This distinguishes an area named north of the town centre from a route that passes through several municipalities. The two details provide different kinds of orientation: Monte della Croce refers to a hiking area, while GB1 takes in the wider regional context of the Basso Vicentino.
