Sovizzo – Hills, Villas and Local History
Accommodation in Sovizzo
Sovizzo combines geologically shaped hills with villas, churches, historical traces and paths along the Retrone. This gives you different options for planning your trip: you can explore the landscape and waterways, visit cultural monuments in the center and in Sovizzo Colle, or discover local festivals and specialties.
Hills, Forests and Waterways
The hills around Sovizzo reach an elevation of 200 meters. They consist predominantly of sedimentary limestone, which formed in a marine environment 40 to 20 million years ago, was subsequently uplifted and shaped by erosion.
Wooded areas and wide clearings alternate throughout the hills. Moisture-loving plants grow on the cooler, damp slopes and in the valleys, while various heat-loving species are found in more exposed locations. Water also shapes the area: the Retrone rises in the east-draining plain of Sovizzo, after the Mezzarolo flows into the Onte and the latter into the Valdiezza.
Villas and Historical Evidence
Villa Bissari-Curti stands in the center of Sovizzo. It was built in the second half of the 16th century and later expanded, among other additions, with a scenographic theater in the ancient style. Another distinctive feature is Villa Curti with its 30,000-square-meter park. It contains restored frescoes, historic statues made of Vicenza stone and an open-air amphitheater with two early Christian urns.
Sovizzo Colle also has a distinct historical character. The church there was incorporated into a fortification built in the Middle Ages, which was destroyed in the 13th century. The church contains 17th-century artworks as well as sculptures by Marinali. Anyone wishing to combine sacred architecture, art and local history will find several different historical periods represented in one place.
Routes, Archaeology and Local Traditions
Opened in 2018, the Sovizzo–Creazzo cycle path follows the course of the Retrone and offers a route for pedestrians and cycling enthusiasts. Another route leads through Vigo to the castles of Giulietta and Romeo. It continues to the Spurghe, passages enclosed by rocks in a wild and impressive natural landscape.
A megalithic funerary and cult complex from the Copper Age has been preserved in its original location and is visible from outside as a permanent archaeological area. The complex features large stone arrangements and is associated with burial and cult practices.
The Feast of Madonna del Rosario on the first Sunday in October is the parish festival of Sovizzo Colle. It combines religious celebrations with leisure and gastronomic offerings, especially the traditional Bìgoli co’ l’arna, a pasta dish with duck sauce. From September onward, local bakeries, pizzerias, pastry shops, delicatessens and restaurants should be able to produce and serve products and typical dishes made from spelt grown in Sovizzo.
