Calalzo di Cadore lies at an altitude of 806 m on the right bank of Lago di Centro Cadore, just beyond Pieve di Cadore. The town combines its lakeside location with historic churches, archaeological heritage, walking trails and a distinctive cycle route.

Springs, lakes and trails

Lagole consists of numerous mineral-water springs spread across the surface, creating an impressive landscape. Several centuries before the birth of Christ, a Paleo-Venetic sanctuary dedicated to the deity Trumusiate was established here. The Museo Archeologico Cadorino, dedicated to Enrico De Lotto, preserves the pre-Roman and Roman archaeological heritage of the Lagole sanctuary near Calalzo di Cadore and of the central Cadore area.

Laghetto delle Tose can be reached via a forest path that is not suitable for wheelchairs. For people with disabilities, a section of a forestry and pasture access road leads from the village of San Francesco d'Ordsina into the area of the Lagole lakes.

Val d'Oten lies between Monte Antelao and the Marmarole group. It offers both opportunities for pleasant walks and more demanding hikes through lush vegetation. Cascata delle Pile can be reached through a gorge carved out by the water. In Praciadelan, specially designed and equipped areas have been created for leisurely walks and picnics.

Churches and historical landmarks

The Chiesa di San Francesco D'Orsina was built in 1522 in the Late Gothic style. Its churchyard contains the graves of partisans from the last war. Another historic place of worship is the Chiesa della Beata Vergine del Caravaggio. It was built in 1822 by Giuseppe Fiori in place of an older wayside shrine dedicated to Santa Margherita.

The Chiesa della Beata Vergine del Caravaggio features elaborately designed polychrome windows made by a workshop from Vicenza, as well as an altarpiece by Giovanni De Bettin da Costalta. In addition to its architectural history, it therefore offers specific examples of craftsmanship and painting.

In the Rizzios district, traditional wooden buildings of the tabià type have been preserved. The Chiesa di Sant'Anna - Rizzios houses valuable Venetian paintings from the 17th century. Two of them are by Gregorio Lazzarini: “La Vergine annunciata con il Padreterno” and “La Vergine in gloria tra i santi”.

Cycle route and practical information

The paved “Lunga via delle Dolomiti” cycle route follows the former railway line, which was closed in 1964. It is 37 km long, starts at Calalzo di Cadore railway station and leads to Cortina d'Ampezzo. The railway station is therefore the specifically named starting point of this connection.

The municipality of Calalzo also provides tourists with a motorhome parking area in the village of La Bella. For further travel planning, you can also include Mel, Ornella, Rivamonte Agordino, Perarolo di Cadore, Canai, Nevegal, Colmean and Pedavena in your plans.
