Discover Fonzaso: Trails, Cultural Heritage and Views
Accommodation in Fonzaso
Fonzaso combines historic townscapes with a variety of trails through the surrounding landscape. It also benefits from regional connections via the SS 50 del Grappa e di Passo Rolle, as well as culinary destinations such as Malga Campon.
Trails between the Town Centre, Viewpoints and Countryside
One particularly easy-to-follow route leads from Fonzaso to Campon d’Avena. It starts at the car park behind the town hall and initially passes through the historic town centre, along Via Mezzaterra and Via Calzen. It then follows the old Galina mule track. At Cima Loreto, views open out over the Cismon Valley and the Monte Grappa massif. The route therefore combines specific points in the town with a transition into the surrounding countryside.
The Giro dei Loch is another clearly defined trail offering: this 5.50 km communal recreational walk was created for primary and lower secondary school students from Fonzaso. It leads through the town’s streets and to Loch di Fonzaso. The Cammino Retico is also relevant for understanding the local landscape. This trail can be completed in seven days, is approximately 170 km long and passes through ten municipalities in Veneto and Trentino. The historic town centres along its route include Fonzaso, Arsiè, Seren del Grappa, Cesiomaggiore, Feltre and Pedavena.
Covolo di San Michele and Falesia di Fonzaso
Covolo di San Michele is located at an elevation of approximately 550 m, in an open and commanding position overlooking the Fonzaso basin. The site includes a chapel dedicated to Saint Michael and a statue of the Virgin Mary in an artificially created niche. The location therefore combines a specific viewpoint with religious elements.
Falesia di Fonzaso offers a different experience. It has around 40 technical climbing routes on edges and in pockets. The approach follows the signs to the Eremo di San Micèl and takes approximately 20 minutes.
Historical Traces and Local Tradition
The town’s history dates back to Roman times: the Via Paolina, a branch of the Via Claudia Augusta Altinate, ran through the Fonzaso area. In the main town, Villa De Pantz is one of the most significant surviving architectural records of Fonzaso’s flourishing period in the 18th century.
Viticulture in the Fonzaso area is also part of the local character. It is an old tradition that has been preserved to this day. At the Festa dell'Uva 2025, a traditional parade with allegorical floats through the town’s streets was announced for Sunday, 28 September 2025. This date describes a past event plan and is not an indication of a current date.
Connections and Regional Highlights
The SS 50 del Grappa e di Passo Rolle connects Fonzaso westwards with Primiero, and eastwards with Feltre, 9 km away, and Belluno, 40 km away. Another regional point of interest is Malga Campon, at 1,497 m. This agricultural guest establishment has a restaurant and a dairy that sells dairy products and cured meats.
