Pontelongo between River History and Sugar Traditions
Accommodation in Pontelongo
Pontelongo is best understood through two themes: the Bacchiglione as a transport and industrial artery, and the town’s sugar traditions. The bridge, mill and sugar factory tell different chapters of this story; buildings and a museum add architecture and regional heritage to the picture. If you are planning a stay in Pontelongo, these offer a tangible way to explore the town’s history, rather than seeing it only as a starting point.
The Bacchiglione, the Bridge and Industrial History
Pontelongo’s historic stone bridge had three arches. The middle one was significantly higher and wider than the other two to accommodate boat traffic. On 17 September 1882, a flood on the Bacchiglione destroyed the historic bridge. Its design illustrates how the river crossing was adapted to boat traffic; its destruction is also part of the river’s history.
The mill also connects Pontelongo with the Bacchiglione. Its history dates back at least to 1875, when Oreste Centanin founded it. Steam power was used for production, and the river served as a transport route. Seen from the left bank, the mill continues to shape the town’s skyline. Another trace of industrial history is the sugar factory, built on a bend in the Bacchiglione on 26 June 1910.
The river is also associated with a historic waterway route via Padua, Battaglia, Bovolenta and Pontelongo, which connected the Euganean Hills with the lagoon near Chioggia. This places the bridge, mill and factory within different aspects of the river’s history: crossing, transport and industrial use.
Architecture and Local History
The Ex Casa del Fascio was built in 1938 and is considered one of the rare examples of Futurist architecture in Veneto’s architectural landscape. The building was sometimes open to visitors during events; it also has a ramp for easier access. Check the current access arrangements in advance when planning a visit. In 2020, Tony Gallo created a mural on one façade of the G. Leopardi middle school.
Villa Foscarini Erizzo offers a much older point of reference. It was probably built in the second half of the 16th century as a summer residence for the Venetian Foscarini da San Stae family. The year 1938 for the Ex Casa del Fascio and the Villa’s probable date of construction represent two different chapters in Pontelongo’s architectural history; the buildings do not share the same function or period.
Museum, Remembrance and Terranova
The GeSTA Museum (Guerra e Saccisica Testimonianze Avvenimenti) opened in April 2014. In its first phase, it focuses on the First World War and the soldiers of the Saccisica. Most of the materials are presented digitally, alongside display cases containing wartime objects, reproductions of documents about soldiers and historical uniforms. Its focus connects a war chapter of regional significance with the history of the Saccisica.
The Parco della Rimembranza was inaugurated in 1927. In Terranova, a district of Pontelongo, the church of San Geminiano di Terranova has stood on the right bank since the river was straightened in 1859. The two parts of the area around San Geminiano are connected by a pedestrian bridge. This local history shows how the course of the river relates to the layout of Terranova. In 2022, Mr Zatti also donated the work “Dante pensante” to the municipal administration.
Sugar Traditions and Activities
In 2006, the municipal administration declared Pontelongo the “Paese dello Zucchero,” or “Sugar Town.” The Festival della Dolcezza includes the last Sunday in November, the first Sunday in December and the patron saint’s feast of Sant’Andrea, celebrated on 30 November. When planning a visit, check the specific event dates for that year in advance.
Over the years, a variety of activities have been held around Pontelongo’s sugar traditions, including train rides to the sugar factory, public demonstrations of sugar sculptures and workshops for young pastry chefs. These examples are part of the history of activities on offer; they do not indicate the programme for a future festival. The Area attrezzata Sport e Salute has a different purpose: it was designed for physical activity, outdoor relaxation and general well-being. In this way, exercise and relaxation complement the town’s historical and cultural themes.
