Majano Between History and Landscape

When considering Majano as a travel destination, you encounter historical sites, religious buildings, a recurring cultural festival and a distinctive moorland landscape within a compact thematic area. Majano’s Roman origins are evidenced by numerous archaeological finds from this period. This gives the town a historical dimension that can be traced at several different sites.

Religious Buildings and Archaeological Sites

The San Giovanni complex has been almost completely restored and comprises the Casa del priore and the Chiesa di San Giovanni. The Chiesa di San Giovanni di Gerusalemme has a Romanesque layout with a rectangular floor plan and a semicircular apse facing east. Inside, it has three wooden altars. One of them is an altar dating from 1500 with six statues.

One of the independent historical sites is the Lombard necropolis of San Salvatore in Majano. It comprises 83 graves containing grave goods of some historical and artistic value. Another significant site is the Hospitale di San Giovanni di Gerusalemme in San Tomaso di Majano. It was founded at the end of the 12th century by the Knights of St John of Jerusalem and was an important station on the Via del Tagliamento along the ancient Via d'Allemagna.

San Tomaso di Majano is also home to the Chiesetta di San Giorgio. It contains 14th-century frescoes that were uncovered again after the earthquake. Castello di Susans completes the historical picture: it is a historic castle from the 17th century that was founded in the 16th century. More recent architecture is also represented. The building housing the offices and headquarters of Snaidero in Majano (Udine) was designed by the architect Angelo Mangiarotti.

Moorland Landscape and the Path over the Moraine Hill

In addition to its cultural and historical destinations, Majano also offers a nature-oriented attraction. The Torbiera di Casasola in Majano is one of the most extensive low-alkalinity wetlands in the region. A low-alkalinity wetland is a distinctive wetland habitat; the term refers to the chemical conditions of the water and soil, not to a general type of landscape.

For orientation within another landscape attraction, the route “10 mila passi di salute FVG - MAJANO” is signposted. It runs predominantly over a moraine hill and begins at the car park by the sports field in Susans. This identifies both the specific starting point and the landscape character of the route, without equating its course with other attractions.
