Udine: Culture between the Castle and the cycle route to Grado

Udine can be explored through its striking buildings, distinctive museum collections and a cycle route leading to the Grado Lagoon. Castello di Udine and the history of Friuli

Castello di Udine stands on a hill overlooking the city’s historic centre. Casa della Contadinanza is located on Piazzale del Castello. It is a reconstruction of a 16th-century municipal building that served as the seat of the Contadinanza, one of the most important political bodies of the Patria del Friuli. The site thus combines the castle’s architectural presence with a specific chapter in the political history of Friuli.

Museums with different focuses

The Civici Musei di Udine organise guided tours and workshops. Reservations are required to participate. Since 1995, the Museo Diocesano e Gallerie del Tiepolo has been housed in the Palazzo Patriarcale di Udine. The palazzo had been the residence of the Patriarch of Aquileia since the 16th century and, as the archbishop’s residence today, is the natural continuation of this function.

The collection of the Museo Diocesano comprises around 700 works, some of which are publicly displayed in the rooms on the first and second floors. The tour begins in the atrium of the Palazzo Patriarcale at the grand staircase. The first decorations by Tiepolo are located there and continue in the Sala Rossa and the Galleria degli Ospiti on the piano nobile. Thus, not only the collection itself is part of the visit, but also its integration into the palace’s rooms.

Casa Cavazzini adds another clearly defined artistic focus. The building is home to the Museo di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Udine. Its Collezione FRIAM comprises 113 works by important names in the history of American contemporary art. The Museo Friulano di Storia Naturale offers a different emphasis, providing educational and scientific outreach for the general public and schools.

Cathedral and the city’s architectural history

The Duomo di Udine is also associated with a precisely documented founding history. Its construction began in 1236 on the site of an existing church dedicated to Saint Jerome. The initiator was Patriarch Bertoldo di Andechs-Merania. The cathedral thus adds another historic site within the urban fabric to the evidence found at the castle and in the Palazzo Patriarcale.

By bicycle from Udine to the lagoon

Udine is also the starting point of the Udine–Grado cycle route (C103). It leads from Udine to Grado and the Grado Lagoon. For travelling by bicycle, it is relevant that Udine is served by frequent regional trains that carry bicycles. This makes it possible to regard cultural sightseeing in the city and a designated connection towards the lagoon as different components of a journey, without combining them into a single type of visit.
