Isola Della Scala: Rice Fields and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Isola Della Scala
Isola Della Scala combines archaeological and historical heritage with a landscape shaped by rice fields, rice mills, and the Palude di Pellegrina wetland. If you are looking for a place with clearly defined cultural themes for your trip to Veneto, you can focus on different aspects here, including the museum, towers, historic complexes, regional rice culture, and natural areas.
Archaeology and Historic Buildings
The Museo Archeologico di Isola della Scala is located in the former Sant’Antonio Chapel in the Santa Maria Maddalena Auditorium. Its collection features archaeological finds discovered along the banks of the Tione and Tartaro rivers and in the Bassa Veronese. The chronological sequence ranges from the Bronze Age to the Lombard period. For planning your visit, the fixed opening hours are important: The museum is open on the first Sunday of each month, except in July and August, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Another prominent testimony to the town’s history is the Torre Scaligera. It was built in the mid-14th century to monitor one of the most important roads between Verona and Mantua. Today, it is the only surviving tower of the numerous towers that formed the Serraglio Scaligero. The interior of the Torre Scaligera is currently not open to visitors. Its preserved exterior and association with the Serraglio Scaligero retain the building’s historic character.
The cultural landscape also includes the Santo Stefano Abbey complex with its abbey church, bell tower, Oratorio di San Vincenzo, and Cortesela, as well as the abbey church itself, which was built in 1590 by the architect Bernardino Brugnoli. The Vo' Pindemonte complex comprises a Venetian villa, a village with a fishpond, avenues lined with horse chestnut trees, and a church. The Villa Pindemonte within this complex is dated to 1739–1742.
Rice Fields, Mills, and Regional Cuisine
Isola della Scala is a center of production for IGP Riso Nano Vialone Veronese rice. The rice fields transform the landscape over the course of the year: The blue of the water is followed by the green of the seedlings and later by the yellow of the ripe rice. As a result, rice cultivation is not only a culinary theme but also a clearly visible part of the landscape.
Local rice mills and associations organize guided tours of the rice fields and historic mills. A particularly notable historic complex is the Pila Vecia Ferron, a rice mill from 1650 that is still in operation and is protected as a historic monument. The rice experience in Isola della Scala also includes a risotto cooking class and a tasting. The annual Fiera del Riso complements this theme with culinary evenings focusing on different topics.
Wetland and Protected Landscape
The Palude di Pellegrina is a wetland in the Natura 2000 network. It has been designated as an SIC since at least 1995 and as a ZPS since 2003 under the number IT3210015, and extends across the areas of Erbè, Isola della Scala, Nogara, and Sorgà. Its distinctive natural features include a heron colony with 400 nests. Breeding populations include purple herons, little egrets, black-crowned night herons, cattle egrets, and squacco herons. Thus, alongside the cultural landscape of rice cultivation, a clearly designated protected area and habitat is also at the center of attention.
Traditions and Further Orientation
The Santuario della Madonna della Bastia is celebrated together with the Sagra della Bastia, which has been held for one hundred years, on the third Sunday of Lent. This date connects the sacred site with a traditional event and complements the town’s historical and culinary themes with a religious tradition.
For further orientation, you will also find Pesina, Castelnuovo Del Garda, Nassar, Ganfardine, Pedemonte, San Giorgio In Salici, San Zeno Di Montagna and Corbiolo.
