San Zeno Di Montagna: Mountain Views, Culture and Marrone
Accommodation in San Zeno Di Montagna
San Zeno Di Montagna combines a distinctive mountain landscape with historic sites, regional tradition and special experiences around Prada-Costabella.
Mountain Landscape, Lake Garda Views and Experiences
A prominent reference point for the high-altitude setting is the two-seater Ortigaretta–Costabella chairlift. On the Prada-Costabella lift system, it reaches an altitude of 1,850 metres. The route of the Prada-Costabella cable car offers exceptional views of Lake Garda and the surrounding Alps. Those who reach the higher areas along this route can observe marmots and chamois in nature.
There are also specific destinations for various active pursuits. Prada is a paragliding launch site at an altitude of 1,700 metres. The Jungle Adventure Park is located in the village of Pineta Sperane and is considered an attractive and exciting option for adults and children. This means that San Zeno Di Montagna can be experienced through its landscape and views as well as through independent recreational activities, without confusing the different locations and elevations.
Historic Buildings and Sacred Sites
Palazzo Ca’ Montagna is a historic villa. The original building dates from the 13th or 14th century and belonged to the noble Montagna family. Between the 14th and 15th centuries, the palazzo was extended and decorated. Elements added later include a portico, a frescoed loggia and Gothic-Venetian windows.
The parish church of San Zeno was built in the second half of the 18th century according to a design by architect Alessandro Peduzzi, on the site of an existing 15th-century chapel. Inside, numerous altars, polychrome marble and friezes shape the space. Another historic landmark is the Madonna della Neve Chapel at Malga Ortigara. It was built in the 17th century by the noble Carlotti family as a votive offering for surviving the threat of the plague.
In Prada Bassa stands the Church of San Bartolomeo, built in the 16th century. According to tradition, it was intended to serve the religious needs of the community. Together with Palazzo Ca’ Montagna, the parish church of San Zeno and the chapel at Malga Ortigara, it shows how different periods and forms coexist in the history of the area.
Events and the Marrone from San Zeno
The Fiera di San Michele takes place every year on 29 September in Prada Bassa. Another fixed event date is the Festa del Marrone di San Zeno D.O.P.: this annual market exhibition is held between the end of October and the beginning of November.
The Marrone from San Zeno di Montagna is an emblem of the municipality in the province of Verona. In 2003, it received the protected designation of origin D.O.P. Anyone wishing to discover the area's regional identity through a specific product will therefore encounter this subject both in the name of the event and in the history of the Marrone itself.
