Costabissara – Archaeology, Churches and Nature in Veneto
Accommodation in Costabissara
Costabissara combines archaeological evidence, small historic churches, natural areas and special offerings for cyclists. Depending on your interests, you can get to know the town through its history, landscape or sporting facilities. The documented sights range from an archaeological exhibition in the town hall to an ecologically valuable wetland and historic sites with a long history of ownership and construction.
Archaeology and Historic Sites
A good starting point for the history of Costabissara is the permanent archaeological exhibition in the town hall. It presents finds from the Bronze and Iron Ages as well as from the Early Middle Ages and the modern era. The exhibition also includes finds from the excavation on Via Mascagni and a significant bronze statuette of the Egyptian god Anubis.
The historic buildings include the Chiesa longobarda di San Giorgio. It was built during the Lombard period and was the parish church of Costabissara until 1920. Its west-facing façade, east-facing apse and pointed-arch style give the building a clearly recognizable architectural form.
The Chiesetta di San Zeno was restored between 2009 and 2011. During the work, missing sections of wall and the roof were reconstructed, a fresco was restored and electric lighting was installed. The church consists of a single rectangular nave that is 12.80 metres long and 5.10 metres wide. This straightforward, precisely described design is what distinguishes it from larger ecclesiastical buildings.
The Castello Sforza Colleoni is also one of the historic points of reference. It was rebuilt in 1285 after its destruction by Ezzelino III in 1241. The park of the Castello contains the Oratorio di Sant'Antonio, a small church with frescoes by Gino Raselli from Asolo. The Castello Sforza Colleoni is a private residence; the complex should therefore not be equated with a museum area that is generally open to the public.
Wetland, Park and Plant Life
The Oasi delle Risorgive represents another side of Costabissara. The ecologically valuable wetland is characterized by numerous watercourses and springs. The water of the sports lake rises there spontaneously from the groundwater. The Oasi is home to waterfowl, birds of prey, woodpeckers and wild orchids. Those who wish to view the landscape not merely as a backdrop but through its waterways and animal and plant life will find an independent natural aspect here alongside the historic sights.
Another landscape highlight is the park of Villa San Carlo. It covers 60,000 square metres, including 3,400 square metres of lake surface, and is surrounded by approximately two kilometres of walls. According to the description, 2,050 plants from 271 species grow there. Villa San Carlo has been owned by the Counts of Bissari since 1285. Historical continuity and the described park landscape are closely tied to the identity of the place here, without this automatically implying any particular visitor access.
Cycling and Different Experiences
For cyclists, Good Wheel's Skills Track offers artificial obstacles that replicate roots, tree trunks and steps. The facility is designed to improve coordination and balance while cycling. Good Wheel's BMX Track provides an additional option: the fully paved circuit is approximately 200 metres long and features jumps, bumps and banked turns.
Costabissara in Travel Comparison
Costabissara is suitable for trip planning if you do not want to reduce historic evidence, nature and cycling to a single theme. The exhibition in the town hall and the churches provide an introduction to the area's history; the Oasi delle Risorgive and the park of Villa San Carlo add landscape highlights; and Good Wheel supplements this selection with specific cycling facilities. For comparison with other destinations, you can also view Velo D'astico, Conco, Vulcano, Nove, Lusiana, Lastebasse, Nanto and Noventa Vicentina.
