Castelfranco Veneto combines important works of art with historic buildings and a distinctive local specialty. If you are looking for a place with specific cultural points of interest for your journey through Veneto, several attractions lead you to Giorgione, the city’s history and the culinary specialties of the winter Radicchio Variegato di Castelfranco.

Giorgione and art in Castelfranco Veneto

The Museo Casa Giorgione is located in the house where Giorgione painted the Fregio. The museum concept revolves around the Pala di Castelfranco, the Fregio delle Arti liberali e meccaniche and the house itself; it also includes 100 original pieces. This gives you several ways to engage with Giorgione’s work and with the building associated with its creation.

Giorgione’s Pala is located in the Cathedral of Castelfranco Veneto. Tuzio Costanzo commissioned it for the family chapel on the occasion of the death of his son Matteo. The cathedral sacristy also contains seven fragments of frescoes by Paolo Caliari, known as Veronese, which were created for the Villa Soranzo di Treville. The two artistic references therefore differ clearly in terms of artist, work and original context.

The Cavallerizza of Villa Parco Bolasco is an arena for equestrian sports and is lined with 52 statues; 44 of them were created by Orazio Marinali and his workshop. The Studiolo in Vicolo dei Vetri is a surviving part of a 15th-century house.

Battlements, tower and theatre

In the northeastern section of Castelfranco Veneto’s historic fortifications, the battlements dating from the late 15th century can be walked along. The upper battlement walkway can be reached via the Torre del Giorgione’s internal staircase and is secured with railings and footbridges. For your visit, this provides a clear distinction between the walkable section of the fortifications and access to the upper battlement walkway.

The Torre Civica reached a height of 43 metres at the beginning of Venetian rule in 1339. The Teatro Accademico offers a different cultural focus: the venue, built in the 18th century, is intended for concerts, theatre performances, conferences and exhibitions.

Local flavour

Radicchio Variegato di Castelfranco is also part of the town’s character. This local winter specialty appears on menus from the first course through to dessert and even in digestif grappa. This makes it a culinary subject that is not limited to a single method of preparation.

Practical information for your visit

The Museo Casa Giorgione has a step-free entrance at street level, as well as accessible toilets for visitors with disabilities. When selecting your cultural stops, you can therefore take note of these explicitly mentioned facilities. For other destinations to include in your travel plans, you can also find Soller, Monastier Di Treviso, Preganziol, Farra Di Soligo, Bigolino, Paese, Treviso and Roncadelle.
