Discover Monastier Di Treviso
Accommodation in Monastier Di Treviso
Monastier Di Treviso brings together several clearly distinct points of interest for a journey through Veneto: historic religious buildings, routes for cyclists and river landscapes. The Santuario della Madonna Nera and the former Santa Maria del Pero Abbey are particularly defining landmarks. At the same time, the “Ciclovia dell’Amicizia – Da Monaco di Baviera a Venezia” passes through the area. If you would like to plan your stay around cultural sites or a long-distance cycle route, Monastier di Treviso offers two distinct perspectives for doing so.
Cultural history around Monastier di Treviso
The Santuario della Madonna Nera dates back to 1523. It received its present name after a fire blackened the Madonna and Child icon venerated there. During the First World War, the Santuario was used as a hospital and hosted the American writer Ernest Hemingway. The history of the site thus extends from the religious veneration of the icon to a much more recent historical context.
Santa Maria del Pero Abbey dates back to the 10th century AD. Santa Maria di Pero is considered the oldest building in Monastier. Today, only the main façade, the wall adjoining the monastery and the bell tower remain of the former abbey. These surviving structural elements in particular distinguish the site from a fully preserved monastic complex.
The architectural heritage also includes the Villa Stefani, Albrizzi complex in the municipality of Monastier di Treviso. It comprises a villa built by the Stefani family in the 17th century, barchesse added in the 18th century, and an oratory dedicated to Saint Peter and consecrated in 1726. In the Fornaci di Monastier district, the new church was structurally completed in 1927 and opened for worship on 1 January 1928.
Cycle routes and different itineraries
The “Ciclovia dell’Amicizia – Da Monaco di Baviera a Venezia” runs from Munich to Venice and passes through the area of Monastier di Treviso. For travel planning with a broader regional perspective, this route places the town on the itinerary between Bavaria and Veneto.
Locally, another cycle route connects Santa Maria del Pero Abbey with the Santuario della Madonna Nera. The route includes a stop at the Chiesa Abbaziale Santa Maria Assunta. On the “Le Vigne dei Dogi” route, a small detour leads to Santa Maria del Pero Abbey before Roncade.
Rivers, park and natural environment
In the area of the municipality of Monastier, the Vallio River is affected by a Site of Community Importance (SCI) established to preserve the natural habitat of the “Lampreda Padana”; this fish still lives there. Along the Meolo River lies the Parco Comunale di Monastier, with approximately 54,000 m² of lawn for leisure and sports. The park has numerous fitness stations and serves as a starting point for rowing activities on the Meolo River. In this way, the river landscape complements the historic sites with its own aspect focused on leisure and physical activity.
