Crespano del Grappa – Churches, Museum and Routes to Cima Grappa
Accommodation in Crespano del Grappa
Crespano del Grappa combines a distinctive religious heritage with a museum on the history of the First World War and routes towards Cima Grappa. At the Madonna del Covolo Sanctuary, routes begin towards the Valle or Cima Grappa.
Churches and Sanctuaries in Crespano del Grappa
The Cathedral of Saints Mark and Pancras was built according to a design by the Venetian architect Giorgio Massari. Its foundation stone was laid on 3 October 1735. The main altar was created by Ludovico Torresini. This building therefore allows visitors to trace not only sacred architecture but also a specific connection to Venetian architectural history.
The Romanesque Church of San Pancrazio represents an older historical layer. It dates from the early 12th century and preserves a wooden crucifix from the 14th century. Today, the historic bell tower is all that remains of the old parish church of San Marco, which dates from the period between the 10th and 12th centuries. The Church of San Paolo del Lastego is considered one of the oldest churches in the upper Trevisan area. It has been fully preserved on the western bank of the Lastego, south of the town.
Another striking religious building is the Madonna del Covolo Sanctuary. It was built according to a design by Antonio Canova. The present sanctuary is a neoclassical building with a circular floor plan, a pronaos with a triangular pediment and Ionic columns. Its architectural form clearly distinguishes it from the town's older churches.
Museum on the History of the First World War
The Museo Storico della Grande Guerra 1915-1918 is housed in the Palazzo Reale San Marco. The collection comprises around one thousand artefacts documenting everyday life at the front. The museum also has a specialist library with 800 volumes on the First World War.
The exhibition is divided into four thematic areas: provisions, field hospital, leisure and trench warfare. This allows you to encounter the events of the war not only as a military occurrence, but also through various aspects of daily life at the front. The museum visit therefore provides a distinct historical focus alongside the churches and routes of Crespano del Grappa.
Routes around Madonna del Covolo
Madonna del Covolo is the starting point for numerous routes leading into the Valle or to Cima Grappa. The historic Mulattiera del Grappa, route CAI 105, connects the sanctuary with Cima Grappa. Running parallel to it is the Direttissima, route CAI 106. It is intended for experienced hikers. The two named routes therefore differ not only in their designation but also in the explicitly stated target group of the Direttissima.
A short forest path from the sanctuary leads to the Tre Busi spring. It is said to have healing properties. The steep, picturesque unpaved road from Crespano to the sanctuary already forms an access route in its own right: it is lined with fifteen wayside shrines corresponding to the Stations of the Cross. In this way, the route connects the landscape around Madonna del Covolo with a religious tradition of pilgrimage routes, without requiring any further statements about facilities or access.
