Fregona: Grotte del Caglieron, Piai Castle and Torchiato
Accommodation in Fregona
Fregona among ravines, trails and history
When you consider Fregona as a travel destination, you encounter several clearly distinct themes: the Grotte del Caglieron in the hamlet of Breda di Fregona, historic traces around Piai Castle, trails on the southern slope of Pizzòc and the local wine culture surrounding Torchiato. This combination makes the area interesting for travellers who want to understand their stay not through a single attraction alone, but through the landscape, history and regional specialities.
The Grotte del Caglieron and the “Pont de Fer” trail
The Grotte del Caglieron are located in the hamlet of Breda di Fregona, near Vittorio Veneto. They include a deep ravine carved into limestone by the Caglieron stream, as well as artificial caves in the canyon walls. The geological formation of the ravine and the man-made cavities are two distinct elements of the same landscape.
A specific connection to this destination is trail 1037/B, “Pont de Fer”. It starts next to Fregona’s municipal stadium, is approximately 1.75 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 100 metres. The walking time is about 45 minutes. For orientation, the starting point, route length, elevation gain and approximate duration of the documented trail are therefore clearly distinguishable from one another.
Piai Castle and a surviving testimony
The history of Piai Castle is also part of Fregona’s landscape. Under the rule of the Da Camino family, the castle reached its greatest importance from the 13th to the 15th century. A specific testimony to this history is a sturdy wooden chest that belonged to Salatino Scotti, the last castellan of Piai Castle, until 1423. Today, it is kept in Fregona’s archpriest’s church. Those interested in the castle will therefore find not only a historical context there, but also a preserved object with a specifically documented connection to a named individual.
Trails on the southern slope of Pizzòc
Several named hiking trails run along the southern slope of Pizzòc. They include the Còl de Fedèra–Agnelezza trail and the delle Mandre trail, known as the “Direttissima”. The trails pass through diverse vegetation including hazel, walnut, sweet chestnut, ash, hornbeam, beech, fir, larch and field maple, as well as numerous shrub species.
Torchiato and regional tastings
Fregona’s culinary side was showcased in 2026 at the Mostra del Torchiato di Fregona DOCG and the Colli di Conegliano DOCG wines. The event took place from 8 to 24 May 2026 at the Centro di Appassimento di Osigo, the headquarters of the Cantina Produttori di Fregona. 2026 marked the 50th edition. The programme included guided tours exploring the secrets of Torchiato DOCG production, followed by tastings of Formaggio di Grotta and Torchiato. The event therefore combines an explanation of a regional product with concrete insights into its production and a tasting.
