Riese Pio X: Culture, Trails and Landscape
Accommodation in Riese Pio X
Riese Pio X brings together the history of Giuseppe Sarto, sacred buildings, trails through the landscape and a cultural programme with its own regional character. The town therefore offers various opportunities for discovery during your stay: you can learn about the birthplace of Pio X, explore a historic church, follow a traditional route to Cendrole or experience the poetic design of Parco della Poesia Andrea Zanzotto.
Casa Museo Pio X and Sacred History
The Casa Museo Pio X complex consists of Casa Maggion, the birthplace of Pio X and the museum. The birthplace within Casa Museo Pio X is a national monument and is considered a well-preserved example of rural architecture. If you would like to visit this site as part of a guided tour or group visit, you must contact the museum's visitor services in advance. This requirement is part of the visiting arrangements and should be taken into account when planning.
The Chiesa di San Matteo is also part of the cultural heritage to explore. It was built in the 18th century based on a design by the architect Andrea Zorzi, who came from Padua. Another historic connection leads to the Santuario della Beata Vergine delle Cendrole. It was one of the oldest parish churches under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Treviso. Riese Pio X is also the first stage of the pilgrimage route “Sulle orme di Giuseppe Sarto”.
Trails between Cendrole and the Landscape
The Sentiero del Curiotto adds a tangible trail experience to the historical themes. Its entrance is located about 500 metres from the cemetery in the direction of Cendrole. The young Giuseppe Sarto regularly used the trail to reach the Santuario delle Cendrole. It therefore represents not only movement through the landscape, but also a traditional connection between the town's history and the sanctuary.
Parco della Poesia Andrea Zanzotto is located in the green surroundings of Villa Eger. Villa Eger is a historic patrician residence whose guests included the young Giuseppe Sarto. Since its opening in 2016, the park has added new poetic trails every year. Along the park avenues, reading stands display selected verses by local authors and unpublished poems. The park thus creates a distinctive cultural accent within the rural surroundings of Riese Pio X.
Traditions and Trails for Planning Your Trip
The Palio dei Mussi is an annual event. The traditional donkey race takes place on the third Sunday in September at the historic Mussodromo racetrack. Before the Palio, a historical parade commemorates the history, culture and traditions of the Riese Pio X community from the early 20th century. Historical costumes, traditional dances and demonstrations of traditional crafts from all eight districts are part of the programme.
For cycling and walking routes, there is also the approximately 15-kilometre-long Sui Sentieri degli Ezzelini trail. It runs through the landscape between Loria and Riese Pio X and then continues through the small nature park along the old riverbed of the Muson. Depending on your personal interests, you can combine a museum visit, sacred history, poetic sites, a traditional annual event and trails through the landscape in Riese Pio X.
