Musestre: Church, Historical Traces and Paths by the Water
Accommodation in Musestre
Musestre combines historic architectural features with paths along the courses of the Musestre and Sile rivers. Points of reference in the area include the Chiesa di Musestre, the Resti di Torre di Musestre, the Via Claudia Augusta and several crossings over the water.
Church and Historical Traces
The Chiesa di Musestre is dedicated to Sant'Ulderico. It was first mentioned in a bull issued by Pope Callistus II in 1123. The present building was rebuilt in the 18th century and last consecrated in 1746. Thus, the same church brings together a written mention from the 12th century and its renewed 18th-century form.
Other historical traces include the Resti di Torre di Musestre, the remains of an old castle. Former work on the water is also part of the area's history: the historical river occupations on the Sile included the “lavanderi de Musestre”. Alongside the church and castle remains, this points to an activity that was part of the river area's former use.
Via Claudia Augusta and Bridges over the Water
The Via Claudia Augusta is a historic Roman road. It runs from Altino via Quarto d'Altino, connects Musestre with the Silea area and continues northwards. Along its route, several local points of reference are linked together. Most of the route can be explored on foot or by bicycle, making it suitable for discovering the area along this connection.
Near Musestre, there is a combined pedestrian and cycle bridge over the river. It connects the route with the landing stage at Quarto d'Altino. The bridge is therefore a specific crossing over the water, while the Via Claudia Augusta is a longer route leading from Altino through several places towards the north. For orientation on site, the individual bridge section and the broader course of the historic road are therefore distinct.
On AIDA Stage 5, the Musestre is crossed via a pedestrian bridge. An unpaved cycle path then begins along the banks of the Sile. The stage thus combines a crossing of the Musestre with a subsequent stretch along the Sile. The transition from the pedestrian bridge to the unpaved cycle path is a separate part of the route.
River Landscape and Local Character
Within the municipality of Roncade, Itinerario TV 2 follows the course of the Musestre River. In the Sile area near Musestre, the spring waters are considered calm. Itinerario TV 2 and the routes of the AIDA stage therefore cover different sections of the river landscape: one route follows the Musestre, while the other stage crosses the river and continues along the Sile.
