Nervesa della Battaglia brings together, within a compact thematic area, the history of Montello, landscapes between the forest and the Piave, and museums dedicated to military and aviation history. This makes it possible to discover the area in different ways: through historic buildings, viewpoints, paths through karst landscapes, exhibitions and a winery tour with tasting. If you want to get to know Veneto through more than just its famous cities, the municipality offers an independent perspective on the mainland, the river landscape and the culture of remembrance.

Abbeys, Carthusian monasteries and places of remembrance

A historic starting point is the Abbazia di Sant’Eustachio. It was founded in the first half of the 11th century by Rambaldo III, Count of Treviso, and his mother Gisla, and preserves the Romanesque structure of its church. Giovanni della Casa wrote Il Galateo and Rime e prose there in 1552. The Certosa del Montello was established in the 14th century near the Valle delle Tre Fonti, an important karst spring or karst resurgence. The Grotta di San Girolamo in the Valle delle Tre Fonti is also associated with this context and is considered the home of the first hermit, Giovanni di Fassa.

The history of the First World War is presented at several institutions from different perspectives. The Museo dei soldati del Montello was founded in 1992 and collects weapons, ammunition, memorabilia, topographical maps, documents and photographs of soldiers who fought on Montello. The Museo della Battaglia del Montello displays original maps, finds and memorabilia, as well as reconstructions of military positions, some of which were created using materials from that period. The Sacrario Militare del Montello preserves the remains of 9,325 soldiers who fell in the First World War during the battles on the Piave.

Montello between karst, the Piave and former military routes

Montello is a karst area where surface water is normally scarce. Its landscape can be experienced along the route Montello – I siti della battaglia del Piave through typical forests, wine-growing areas, karst sinkholes and riverside areas. The route L’anello del Montello also leads to preserved remains of first- and second-line trenches, as well as bunkers north of Montello.

Former transport infrastructure also forms part of the local landscape. The Pista ciclabile della Tradotta follows the former Montebelluna–Susegana railway line, which was built for military purposes. The walking route Nervesa tra il Piave e la Tradotta begins in Bidasio, follows the Piave, passes through Nervesa della Battaglia and continues to the former wartime railway line. The balconies of the Museo dei soldati del Montello offer a panoramic view of the battlefield and the Piave plain, helping visitors understand the landscape. The front viewing balcony of the Sacrario Militare del Montello overlooks the battlefield of the Battaglia del Solstizio.

Aviation history and wine

The Fondazione Jonathan Collection in Nervesa della Battaglia houses a flying museum connected with the aviation history of the First World War. The aircraft in the collection are faithful, airworthy reproductions of historic aircraft and are regularly presented in flight at public events and other events. Giusti Wine offers another way to discover the region: winery tours with tasting are available in Nervesa della Battaglia.
