Discover Cavaso Del Tomba
Accommodation in Cavaso Del Tomba
Cavaso del Tomba lies on the southern slope of the spur that extends from Monte Grappa towards the Piave. The town combines landscape experiences with historic sites: on Monte Tomba, memorial architecture and sweeping views await you, while in Castelcies, at Villa Premoli and elsewhere, churches, chapels and villas bring the history of the surrounding area to life.
Monte Tomba: Landscape and Remembrance
At 868 metres, Monte Tomba offers a 360-degree view of the peaks of the Feltrino area, the Venetian plain, the hills of Asolo and the Piave. The area can be explored on walks through a natural setting. There are also specific routes for hiking: Monte Grappa hiking trail 211 leads from Cavaso del Tomba to Castel Cesil. CAI hiking trail 212 comes from the church of Caniezza in Cavaso del Tomba and meets the Monte Tomba–Cima della Mandria route.
On Monte Tomba, the Chiesa Alpina sul Monte Tomba commemorates the Italian and French soldiers who fell there in 1917–18. The church was dedicated to their memory. A movable wall in the lower part of the façade connects the sacred space with the landscape. This makes the church one of the places where the history of the mountain can be experienced as an inseparable part of its surroundings.
Churches, Castle Ruins and Historic Villas
The Pieve della Visitazione della Beata Vergine Maria preserves remarkable paintings. In Castelcies, the recently restored medieval Chapel of San Martino forms part of the local complex; the Church of San Martino in Castelcies also dates back to the 11th century. The remains of Castelcies Castle were uncovered through more recent archaeological excavations and subsequently consolidated by the Soprintendenza per i Beni Ambientali e Architettonici del Veneto Orientale. They are visible on the rounded hilltop a few dozen metres west of the church.
Further historical highlights include the 17th-century Villa Premoli, the 18th-century Villa Bianchi in the Palladian style, and San Giorgio on Colle della Bastia, which dates back to the 15th century. Each of these sites represents a distinct facet of the town's history and can be combined with different focuses when exploring Cavaso del Tomba.
Natural Areas, Trails and Events
The municipality's core area almost coincides with the SIC and ZPS areas of Massiccio del Grappa. They contain natural and near-natural habitats on land and in the water. The nearby trenches of Castel Cesil can be reached on foot via CAI hiking trail 212 from Cavaso del Tomba. An additional cultural occasion is the annual “Arte e Natura” event: during the event, Castelcies, Bocca di Serra and Costalunga become an open-air museum.
Villa Premoli and Local Specialities
At Villa Premoli, you can view the surrounding wall of the “Le Cioere” orchard via a route that is freely accessible. Regular visiting hours are on the first Monday of each month from 10:30 to 12:30; visits are also possible by appointment. With advance booking, Villa Premoli offers cellar tastings of its organically produced Prosecco for up to 40 people.
