If you want to understand Zerman as a destination, Sant’Elena Church offers a particularly clear insight into the history of the area. This historical focus is complemented by the Zuliani and Condulmer villas, Golf Zerman with its development from a practice facility into a competition course, and the Sagra di Sant’Elena Imperatrice held in August. In Zerman, sacred art, historic architecture, sport and local festival tradition thus stand side by side in different forms.

Sant’Elena: Architectural History and Art

From 1231, Sant’Elena Church was a simple chapel under the jurisdiction of Collalto and associated with Nervesa Abbey. In 1596, it became a parish church when a baptismal font was installed. These dates mark an important change in its function: the simple chapel became a parish church with its own baptismal facility.

The church’s present form was created through expansion work entrusted to the architect Giuseppe Segusini from Feltre. As a result, Sant’Elena acquired a distinctly neo-Renaissance appearance. Inside, the high altar features an altarpiece of the Madonna, Child and Saints by Palma il Vecchio. Above the portal, in the pronaos, there is a fresco of Saint Helena attributed to Paolo Veronese. The church can therefore be understood not only through its architectural history, but also through specific works and attributions.

Historic Villas in Zerman

The area’s architectural history also includes two villas with different historical associations. Villa Zuliani dates from the 16th century and also features elements from the 17th century. Its exterior surfaces bear frescoes from the Veronese school. Villa Condulmer was rebuilt in the 17th century. Both names therefore represent historic buildings in which the period of construction, subsequent design and artistic decoration each add distinctive accents.

Golf Zerman and the Flat Landscape

Golf Zerman is a sporting focal point with a clearly documented development. The facility was created in 1993 based on a project by engineer Arcibaldo Bonaventura, initially as a practice facility with an adjoining three-hole course. Over the years, it was expanded to nine holes. Golf Zerman currently has a par-35/70 competition course with 9 or 18 holes and a length of 5,874 metres.

The golf course extends across flat terrain. For orientation purposes, the key factors are therefore the combination of its development history, the current information on the number of holes and length, and the flat nature of the terrain.

Sagra di Sant’Elena Imperatrice

The Sagra di Sant’Elena Imperatrice is held in Zerman in August. It is regarded as a symbolic event for the local community and began as a wine festival. Its history therefore links the festival to the local wine tradition, while its name refers to Saint Helena and Sant’Elena Church.
