Fontanelle: History in a Flat Landscape
Fontanelle lies in a completely flat area in the province of Treviso. The town offers two clearly distinct approaches to planning your trip: you can explore historic sights and art-historical buildings or include the Giramonticano nature trail along the Monticano River. This allows you to get to know Fontanelle through specific cultural monuments and its rural landscape.
Churches, Villas and a Historical Tour
Fontanelle has a historical and art-historical tour. Local sights include the Chiesa di San Pietro, Villa Marcello, the Chiesa di Lutrano and Villa Galvagna. The stops represent different aspects of the town's history: religious buildings can be understood through their construction and restoration phases, while for the villas, their traditional attribution and classification within the tour are the main focus.
The Chiesa di San Pietro was consecrated by Bishop Nicolò Trevisan on 24 September 1480. At the same time, it dates back approximately to the mid-15th century. In the case of the Chiesa di Lutrano, the present structure points to an extension and restoration carried out from 1832 to 1840; further work followed in 1850. The bell tower now stands next to the church. Villa Galvagna is attributed almost unanimously to the Galvagna family. During the tour, you can therefore compare specific dates, structural changes and a traditional family attribution.
Santa Maria del Palù: Spring, Temple and Tradition
Another independent stop is the Chiesetta di Santa Maria del Palù. It already existed in 1185, as shown by a bull issued by Pope Lucius III. A spring that flows year-round rises beneath its altar. Emilio Girelli had a circular temple built around the spring. The Annunciation of the Lord is celebrated at the temple every year on 25 March. Here, the chapel's documented age, an architectural detail at the spring and an annually recurring religious date are brought together.
The Giramonticano along the Monticano
The Giramonticano is a nature trail on the embankment of the Monticano River. It is connected to the cycleway network and to smaller roads near the river. The trail reaches Fontanelle, runs along the Monticano and passes through a well-maintained rural landscape. If you want to experience the character of the town not only through churches and villas but also through its landscape, this is the documented route for that purpose. Its connection to the cycleway network also makes it relevant as part of a cycling orientation in the surrounding area, without allowing any additional distance or time information to be derived from it.
