Motta di Livenza is a small town of waterways situated between the Livenza and Monticano rivers. For your travel planning, the town combines historic religious buildings, a watercourse running through the town centre, designated cultural sites and several starting points for cycling tours. Motta di Livenza combines cultural sightseeing with routes through the surrounding area.

Churches and Religious History

A special site is the Santuario Basilica Madonna dei Miracoli. It is associated with an apparition of the Madonna in Motta di Livenza on 9 March 1510. Immediately afterwards, numerous pilgrims came to the site of the apparition. The Cappella dell’Apparizione contains a crypt where a very old statue of the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child is venerated. The statue stands beneath the altar in a marble niche; this specific location gives the visit a clearly recognisable historical and religious character.

The present-day Duomo di Motta di Livenza was built from 1516 onwards based on a design by Antonio Buora. The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista offers an even earlier historical reference and is considered the oldest church in Motta di Livenza. Its origins date back to the early period of Christianity in the Veneto. By visiting the town’s churches one after another, you encounter different periods without reducing the most important sites to a single building.

Town of Waterways and Cycling Routes

The Livenzetta Canal crosses the centre of Motta di Livenza and runs through the former riverbed of the Livenza. This watercourse is therefore an integral part of the townscape. The Passerella degli Alpini provides another specific connection to the river: the lattice structure from the 1930s spans the Livenza and serves as a natural starting point for cycling tours.

For a longer cycling tour, the Giro di Villanova is a documented option. From Riviera Scarpa to Villa Rietti-Rota, the route follows the course of the TV2. In Parco Spinade, a combined cycle and pedestrian path is also integrated into the urban fabric. The area in question serves as a starting point for excursions into the surrounding area. The town’s cycling connections therefore vary: they range from the waterside path in the town centre and a prominent river crossing to a route with named starting and finishing points.

Culture and Local Specialities

The Fondazione Giacomini is a cultural centre with a tourist office. It also preserves a sketch by Pellizza da Volpedo. Sopa Coada, for which Motta di Livenza is known, represents the local culinary tradition. The thick soup is usually prepared with stale bread, broth, Grana cheese and pigeon meat; in the version from Motta, the pigeon meat is replaced with chicken. Part of the Motta di Livenza area also belongs to the production zones designated in the production regulations of the DOC Lison-Pramaggiore.
