Discover Faedis: Castles, Forest Paths and Wine

Faedis combines a landscape of castles, forest paths and a distinctive wine culture. The town is particularly interesting for planning your trip if you want not only to see historic sites, but also connect them via marked paths and signposted routes. In addition, there are the Cascate Gemelle, the huts of Topli Uorch and local wines such as Refosco and Picolit.

Castle Route and Historic Sites

The castle route La pedemontana orientale passes through Faedis towards Canale di Grivò and includes the Castelli di Cucagna and Zucco. Above Faedis, Castello di Cucagna formed the center of a powerful defensive system. A visit is available by reservation through the Consorzio per la Salvaguardia dei Castelli Storici del Friuli Venezia Giulia. You can reach the site on foot via a path from Borgo Santa Anastasia.

Castello di Zucco can also be reached on foot from Faedis via marked forest paths. It was built in 1248 by Adalpretto di Cucagna on Rodingerius Hill. From the village of Sant'Anastasia, numerous panoramic paths also lead through valleys and past castles to the alpine huts. Castello di Soffumbergo was selected by the patriarch in 1298 as the court's summer residence; its ancient chapel has been completely restored.

In the town center, the Centa di Faedis fortification stood in Piazza Plebiscito beneath the 20th-century Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Today, only the 14th-century tower remains of the complex; a bell chamber was added to it in the 17th century. At the Church of Madonna in Castello, the building dates from the 14th century; a fresco of the Madonna Lactans can be viewed there.

Forest Path to the Cascate Gemelle

A separate excursion leads to the Cascate Gemelle. The path runs through the forest parallel to the Rio Marchiat and leads to the twin waterfalls near Faedis. After driving from Faedis towards Canebola, access begins at a wooden sign. From the parking lot, an approximately 50 m-long footpath leads there. The approximate figure refers to this footpath and not to the entire length of the forest path.

Another signposted route leads from Faedis to the Malghe di Porzus. There is a large parking lot near the huts. The huts of Topli Uorch, now generally known as Malghe di Porzus, are a national monument commemorating a massacre carried out between partisan forces in 1945. Faedis Wine-Growing Region

Faedis is a well-known wine-growing region. Its leading product is Refosco, an old grape variety with a deep ruby-red color and fruity flavor. Around twenty types of wine are grown in the municipality; Picolit is also part of wine production in Faedis. Local offerings include visits and tastings at numerous wineries. The Festa del Vino e delle Fragole is one of the best-known events held by the Faedis community.
