Churches and Local History

The Church of San Lorenzo stands on the outskirts of Forni di Sotto and features a distinctive portico and a small bell gable. Inside is a fresco cycle by Gianfrancesco da Tolmezzo dated to 1492. It depicts, among other subjects, the Church Fathers, the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence, the Annunciation and various saints. The Church of Santa Maria del Rosario is characterised by its detached square bell tower. Clock faces with Roman numerals and round-arched openings in the belfry define its appearance.

The history of the town also includes the fire of 1944, which completely destroyed Forni di Sotto. After the war, the town was rebuilt around the fountains of its three districts. The ruins of Chiastelàt Castle are still visible. Forni di Sotto is also home to the fully reconstructed cableway of Val Poschiadea. It was once used to transport timber from remote forests to the valley, pointing to an earlier form of forest use.
