Churches and Evidence of Local History

The Church of San Leonardo is documented as existing as early as the 12th century. After being damaged in the 1976 Friuli earthquake, it was restored between 1984 and 1986. Both its long history and its restoration are therefore clearly documented features of the area.

Another cultural and historical focal point is Cravero. The Church of Santa Lucia was built in 1454. Its fresco cycle is attributed to the painter Jernej iz Loke, also known as Bartolomeo of Škofja Loka, or to one of his pupils. The church also contains a richly gilded and decorated wooden altar, the work of Lukas Sharf from the 18th century. The attribution of the fresco cycle is expressly left open, indicating either possible authorship by the painter or the work of one of his pupils.

The stone slab of the Merso Bank forms part of the history of local governance. It established the administrative and legal rules governing local autonomy up to the 19th century. This testimony complements the churches and their furnishings by offering insight into the earlier organisation of the community.

Cascate di Kot and Trails Along the Water

Just outside San Leonardo, on the road to Altana, lies the Cascate di Kot, a site of notable natural interest. The protected site is home to the rare plant Ruscus hypoglossum. The landscape is therefore shaped not only by the water, but also by the distinctive plant life documented at this location.

A simple path along the Patok and Pod Tamoran streams leads to the hollow containing the Cascate di Kot. Along the way, it passes the ruins of an old mill. The San Leonardo Trail runs between Merso di Sopra and Cravero, complementing this landscape highlight with another established connection between places in the surrounding area.

Activities for Different Travel Plans

In Merso di Sopra, Parco Michael Puppin offers games and attractions for children of all ages. The park’s sports complex also includes a climbing wall that is open to everyone. This makes it possible to combine visits to cultural and historical sites with a destination that explicitly includes activities for children and a freely accessible sports facility.

Getting There, with Particular Attention to the Rail Connection

One important distinction should be noted when planning your journey: the municipal travel information lists the Udine–Cividale railway line as a train connection for reaching San Leonardo. At the same time, this railway line has been closed to rail traffic since 20 May 2024; replacement buses are operating instead. When planning your journey, you should therefore consider the listed connection together with the documented replacement service.
