Sanguinetto combines a clearly recognizable local history with sacred art, a traditional specialty and a completely flat area typical of the Po Plain. If you are looking for accommodation in a place with distinctive historical points of interest, Sanguinetto offers several independent themes: the castle in the heart of the town, important churches and oratories, as well as the local Rofioi tradition.

Castle and local history

The castle of Sanguinetto was built in the 14th century on the orders of the Scaligeri. The square complex has sides measuring approximately 55 metres. Its location in the heart of the town makes the castle a clear point of reference when you want to explore Sanguinetto on foot. The town’s earlier history also includes its first church: it was established in 1145 as a chapel dependent on Casaleone. This means that the documented ecclesiastical history reaches significantly further back than the buildings visible today.

Churches, frescoes and oratories

The parish church of San Giorgio Martire was completed in 1835 based on a design by the Verona-born architect Giovanni Canella. Its interior was frescoed by the painter Gaetano Miolato. Its features include 14 Stations of the Cross, as well as scenes of the Last Supper, the Multiplication of the Loaves and the martyrdom of Saint George. The church thus combines architectural history with an extensive pictorial representation of religious themes. A more recent ecclesiastical-historical feature is the present-day parish church of Santa Maria Regina in Venera. It was completed in 1959 and consecrated in 2001. The Oratorio delle Tre Vie contains a niche with a 17th-century image of the Blessed Virgin Mary, flanked by Francis of Assisi and another saint. The oratory had already been completed by 1747. It is used particularly for Marian devotion, including the Rosary in May and the celebration of the “11 Masses” on a single day in July.

Rofioi and local tradition

A special opportunity to get to know Sanguinetto through its culinary side is the Antica Sagra dei Rofioi. It normally takes place on the second Sunday of September and includes food stalls, dance evenings, as well as the tasting and sale of traditional Rofioi. These are puff pastries originating from Sanguinetto, filled with almonds, amaretti, rum and biscuits. The event thus combines a specific local product with a recurring festival date.

Flat landscape and crafts tradition

The completely flat area of Sanguinetto reflects the character of the Po Plain. In addition to the experience of the landscape, the town has a documented furniture sector specializing in period-style furniture and based on family-run businesses. There are also highly specialized restoration workshops. These two economic sectors are among the distinctive local features and broaden the perspective beyond the historic buildings.

Other places to compare

If you would like to compare Sanguinetto with other places from the same selection, here you will find Pontepossero, Rosta, San Martino Buon Albergo, Affi, Mazzano, Bionde, Castelnuovo Del Garda and Oppeano.
