Discover Polazzo: Karst History and Rural Landscapes
Accommodation in Polazzo
Polazzo between Karst History and Rural Cultural Landscapes
Polazzo combines archaeological evidence with a landscape shaped by traditional agriculture and a protected habitat. This gives you different points of interest for planning your trip: you can explore a protohistoric settlement, place the history surrounding Sant’Agata in context, or discover the special features of Parco Rurale Alture di Polazzo.
Castelliere and Traces of the Past
The Castelliere di Polazzo is a fortified protohistoric settlement. It was used between the Bronze Age and the early phases of the Iron Age, representing a long history of settlement in the area. The route to the Castelliere di Polazzo begins at Sas de San Belin in Polazzo. This specific starting point helps you connect the archaeological site geographically with the village, without equating the settlement with a present-day town centre or a particular accommodation location.
Another historical reference can be found near the Church of Sant’Agata. During excavations in 1890, numerous fragments of a tessellated pavement were discovered there. The church was built in 1676. Together with the Castelliere, this provides two different historical perspectives: a fortified settlement dating from the period between the Bronze Age and the early phases of the Iron Age, and archaeological finds in the surroundings of the Church of Sant’Agata, built in 1676.
Parco Rurale Alture di Polazzo
Parco Rurale Alture di Polazzo is located in a protected area within the European Natura 2000 network. Its landscape is shaped not only by natural conditions but also by social farming. Traditional grazing, maintained for more than a century, preserves the priority habitat “Landa Carsica” or “Gmaina”. This reveals a distinctive form of cultural landscape in which the use of the pastures is part of their preservation.
A ride on the electric Agribus provides insights into the cattle, sheep, donkeys and pigs kept on the pastures throughout the year. This aspect distinguishes the park from a visit focused exclusively on archaeology: here, the emphasis is on the connection between agriculture, livestock farming and protected habitat. If you assess Polazzo according to different types of experience, the Agribus can therefore be associated with the rural and nature-oriented character of the area.
Fossils at the Edge of the Karst Plateau
The paleontological outcrop at Polazzo also adds to the overall picture of the area. It contains well-preserved fossil remains of plants and fish. The outcrop is located in the village of Polazzo, in the municipality of Fogliano Redipuglia, at the edge of the Karst plateau. This adds an earth-historical perspective to the history of settlement and agriculture. The site represents a separate area of interest and should not be equated with the Castelliere or the park.
