Discover Ronchi Dei Legionari
Accommodation in Ronchi Dei Legionari
Ronchi dei Legionari brings together Roman, ecclesiastical and Venetian traces within a manageable area. The Villa romana di Ronchi dei Legionari is particularly distinctive: the archaeological complex combines visible mosaic floors with a visitor path through the building complex. There is also a municipal antiquarium in the town centre, historic buildings and a hiking route leading to the oldest hamlet in the town. If you are considering accommodation in Ronchi Dei Legionari, you can align your stay with the main features of Roman history, the town centre, historic architecture or the landscape.
The Villa romana di Ronchi dei Legionari
The Villa romana di Ronchi dei Legionari was a residential and production settlement. It was established around the middle of the 1st century BC and remained in existence, with various changes, until the 3rd century AD. A fire led to its final abandonment. Its chronological development makes the site an illustrative testimony to a settlement that was modified over several centuries.
Today, visitors can pass through the building complex along a visitor path with a footbridge and information panels. Mosaic floors are still visible in situ in the villa. They are either polychrome or decorated in geometric black and white designs, with marble inlays. The archaeological complex is located in a rural area west of the town of Ronchi dei Legionari, near Friuli Venezia Giulia Airport. This means that this attraction is geographically separate from the antiquarium in the town centre.
Antiquarium and historic evidence in the town
The Antiquarium comunale di Ronchi dei Legionari opened in 2012. It is housed in the specially renovated hayloft of an 18th-century manor villa in the town centre. The exhibition displays mosaics, coins, ceramics, glass, metal objects and building materials from the Roman settlement. Anyone wishing to view the archaeological finds not only at the original complex but also in an exhibition will find a second documented perspective on the town's Roman history here.
Villa Blasig contains a floor mosaic depicting Jesus, as well as two wall panels showing Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. The Chiesa di San Lorenzo Martire was extended and completely renovated in 1645. Palazzo Giraldi-Fabris is the oldest surviving Venetian palace in Ronchi dei Legionari. Count Antonio Giraldi had it built at the end of the 17th century where old roads converged; it is owned by the Fabris family.
Hiking route, Karst and regional airport
A hiking route follows the Cavea, an ancient amphitheatre that is now used as a skate park. It also reaches Androna Palmada, the oldest hamlet of Ronchi dei Legionari. This route therefore connects two clearly different local features: an ancient structure with a present-day use and a historic hamlet.
Ronchi dei Legionari lies on the slopes of the Karst and is home to a regional airport. The landscape setting and a specific arrival point therefore come together here. When searching for a hotel, you can therefore first decide whether the Roman villa, the antiquarium, the historic architecture or the route through the town is the main reason for your stay.
