Accommodation in Gorizia
Gorizia between fortress, museums and border
Gorizia is suitable for travellers who would like to combine their stay with culture and urban history. The Castello di Gorizia still preserves the appearance of a fortress. Inside, it houses the distributed Theatrum Instrumentorum exhibition. Those interested in the history of the city and its region will find photographs, weapons, medals and other evidence of life in the trenches of Gorizia during the First World War at the Museo della Grande Guerra. A full-scale reconstructed trench system can be walked through there.
Other museums focus on different themes. The Museo della Moda e delle Arti Applicate displays garments and accessories from the 18th to the 20th century. The Collezione Archeologica traces the history from the Late Palaeolithic through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance with finds from Gorizia and the nearby areas. At the Fondazione Palazzo Coronini Cronberg, the museum tour leads through fifteen rooms. This includes the room in which Charles X of Bourbon, the last King of France, died in 1836. Villa Coronini Cronberg, its outbuildings and its park can be visited.
Historic sites and green paths
The Sinagoga Ebraica is part of the city’s complex history. It was built in 1756 and stands in the centre of the former Jewish ghetto. The border between Gorizia and Nova Gorica runs at Stazione della Transalpina. The Map of Memories addresses historical connections at its stations: each station has an information totem that briefly describes the context and provides access to multimedia content via a QR code.
The parks also give a stay different accents. Parco di villa Coronini Cronberg was laid out towards the end of the 19th century as part of an urban improvement programme intended to establish Gorizia as a garden city. In Parco della Rimembranza di Gorizia, several shady paths lead to the memorials. Parco di Piuma Isonzo has an educational nature trail. In Parco urbano del Castello, there is a comfortable unpaved path, a large sunny recreational area, and several benches and tables. Depending on your interests, you can therefore focus your visit more strongly on museum spaces, historic places of remembrance or paths through green areas.
Getting there and finding your way around the city
The urban transport network is a useful point of reference when planning your stay. It comprises seven daytime routes, one night route and a cross-border connection to Nova Gorica in Slovenia. All routes run via the intermodal passenger centre at the railway station. Line 1 is the network’s most important line, runs at intervals of 12 to 15 minutes and serves major sights in the city. When looking for a hotel in Gorizia, you can therefore consider whether cultural attractions, park paths or connections to urban transport are the most important factors for you.
Gorizia’s culinary tradition reflects the coexistence of the Latin, Germanic and Slavic cultural spheres that developed over centuries. This adds another perspective on the character of the city to its historic sites. Gorizia can therefore be explored through individual museums and monuments as well as through parks, transport routes, places of remembrance and its special location on the border.
