If you choose Savogna D'isonzo for a trip focused on history, military history, ancient routes and landscapes on the edge of the Karst come together here. The area includes flat and alluvial zones between the Isonzo (Soča) and Vipacco (Vipava) rivers south of Gorizia. For your planning, this offers a combination of historic paths, walks, viewpoints and activities on the water.

Military History at Monte San Michele

A central area of interest is the Monte San Michele fortification in the hamlet of Cotici. It comprises six bunker positions as well as additional auxiliary structures. On Monte Škofnik, a foothill of Monte San Michele, the PCO of the fortification offers views of the Gorizia threshold, the Vipacco Valley and the Lokvica plateau, as well as toward the sea near Monfalcone.

The historic Brestovec Trail is a well-signposted and easily walkable historical and educational circular route. After parking at the sports field in San Michele del Carso, you can reach Brestovec on foot via the signposted route. The Cannoniera along the trail is fully open to visitors and houses historical installations featuring stories about the lives of an Italian and an Austro-Hungarian soldier. This makes it possible to explore history not only through fortifications, but also through the personal perspectives presented within them.

Castles, Churches and Ancient Routes

Historical points of interest can also be found away from the military installations. Castello di Rubbia was built between the 15th and 16th centuries on the foundations of older fortifications. In 1563, Primož Trubar, the Protestant preacher, found accommodation there in order to present his reformist ideas to the population.

The remains of the Roman bridge over the Isonzo bear witness to the existence of a Roman road that led from the Friulian plain via Renče toward central Slovenia. The parish church of San Martino Vescovo contains an altarpiece dated 1930 depicting Saint Martin and the poor man. The new San Martino Vescovo Church was built in 1927; the presbytery of the previous building, which had been largely destroyed during the First World War, survived and was incorporated into the new structure. The church of Gabria was damaged during the First World War and is said to have been rebuilt in the 18th century.

Walks, Cave, Water and Cycling Route

In the hamlets of Rupa, Peci and Gabria on the edge of the Karst, there are numerous opportunities for walks and paths through the green landscape. Those wishing to include a special geological stop can find the Kraljica Krasa Cave (Regina del Carso) in San Michele del Carso, behind the shelter of the speleological group Kraški krti – Talpe del Carso.

For an activity on the water, kayaking or inflatable-boat trips are possible on the calmer section of the Vipacco River between Gabria and Rubbia, up to its confluence with the Isonzo. Another perspective is offered by the Great War Ring (R047), which passes through Savogna d'Isonzo on its way to Gorizia. This allows you to tailor your stay more toward history, landscapes, water or a cycling route, depending on your interests.

Choose Accommodation Based on Your Travel Interests

When searching for accommodation in Savogna D'isonzo, you can first decide which experiences should shape your stay.
