San Floriano del Collio lies in the highest part of the Collio region, at 276 metres above sea level. From the village, views extend as far as nearby Brda in Slovenia. The village therefore combines a clearly recognisable elevated location with visible traces of its history and a distinct cultural character. If you choose a destination not only for its landscape but also for its preserved local features, you will find several specific points of interest here.

Water Features in the Village

Around 12 public and 31 private village fountains have been well preserved and are worth seeing. Their significance becomes particularly clear when considering their former function: the village fountains were once San Floriano del Collio’s only source of drinking water. They are no longer in use today.

This distinction is crucial to the history of the village. The fountains are not merely individual historic features; they point to the village’s former water supply. Anyone exploring San Floriano del Collio can therefore see in them a concrete example of how closely everyday life was once connected to the village structures that were available. The approximate number of public and private fountains also shows that this characteristic is present in several parts of the village.

San Floriano Church and Historical Traces

Another important point of interest is San Floriano Church. It was rebuilt in 1924 based on a design by architect Max Fabiani. The church opens onto a viewpoint and a memorial to those who fell in the Second World War. Architecture, views and remembrance are directly connected here, without reducing the church to only one of these meanings.

Historical traces have also been preserved on the southwestern slope of Castello Formentini. Damage from the war of 1915 to 1918 is still visible there; remnants of the original walls have also survived. Together with the church’s reconstruction in 1924, the visible war damage and wall remnants form part of San Floriano del Collio’s historic villagescape.

Hills, Brda and White Wines

The hilly setting also provides the context for a traditional designation of the village: San Floriano del Collio is known as the land of grapes and cherries. The designation combines two specific terms in a short traditional formula. As an expression passed down through language, it complements the visible local features with a cultural aspect of San Floriano del Collio’s character.

The hills also provide a microclimate that favours characterful white wines. The hilly setting connects the village’s landscape with its cultural character.
