Cormòns between the Collio Hills and the Plain

Cormòns lies where the hills of the Collio end and the plain begins. Immediately behind the town, Monte Quarin rises as the final spur of the Collio. The mountain is 274 m high and has a gently undulating profile. This location combines a clearly defined hilly area with the transition to the plain, making Cormòns a suitable starting point if you wish to explore the landscape, culture and Collio wine region together.

Medieval Traces and Historic Buildings

The castle on Monte Quarin preserves significant medieval remains. In the town and its cultural surroundings, there are also several religious buildings with their own history. The Duomo di Sant’Adalberto was built between 1736 and 1760 and incorporates the former 13th-century church of Sant'Adalberto. The Church of Santa Caterina was also recognised as the Santuario di Rosa Mistica in 1931, when the Rosa-Mistica statue was crowned. Every year on 26 July, a Mass is celebrated at the Beata Vergine del Soccorso, also known as the Messa dei nonni.

Another cultural site is Palazzo Locatelli, an elegant 18th-century residence in the Palladian style. Its outbuildings house the Museo civico del territorio. The museum has a thematic section dedicated to the work of the sculptor Alfonso Canciani (1863–1955). In this way, architectural history, religious culture and regional art can be explored in different forms.

Paths through the Cormòns Landscape

For a walk through the landscape, the “10 thousand steps of health” trail is a good option. It begins at a sports facility, passes through the Cormons countryside and ends in the village of Borgnano. Parking is available at the starting point; the circular route then returns to the starting point. The trail runs along natural paths beside rows of trees and heads towards the Medea hill. At its foot stands the votive chapel of Santa Fosca Vecchia.

Nature-oriented excursions are also suitable on the north-facing slopes of Monte Quarin and in Parco di Plessiva. Alongside its historic attractions, Cormòns therefore offers a landscape perspective that can be explored through paths, rows of trees, hills and nature observations.

Collio Wine and Regional Specialities

Cormons is regarded as the main town of the Collio hill country. The microclimate of Cormons and the Ponka soil typical of the Collio are considered particularly suitable for wine-growing. A key address for this subject is the Enoteca di Cormòns on Piazza XXIV Maggio. It is a centre for promoting and enhancing the Collio, as well as a centre for Friulian wine.

The Enoteca di Cormòns organises courses, tastings, events and technical and oenological conferences. These are aimed at trade visitors, event guests and tourist groups. The Enoteca was founded as a cooperative by the wine-growers of Cormons; today, it also includes producers from the Collio and the Province of Gorizia. The regional flavour profile also includes Prosciutto dolce di Cormons, which is smoked over cherry wood and bay leaves.

Cycle Routes and Historic Wineries

The surroundings can also be viewed from different perspectives by bicycle. The 13 km-long Girangoris cycle path is located on the grounds of Tenuta di Angoris. The history of Tenuta di Angoris in Cormons dates back to 1648. Another cycling route heads towards Cormons via Subida, Russiz di Sopra, Preval, Mossa, Lucinico and Piedimonte/Gorizia. These routes connect different landscape and place names without needing to be combined into a single route.
