Gabria combines trails, cycling routes, green Karst landscape and a documented church history. For planning your trip, the range of experiences is particularly interesting: you can follow a trail along the Vipava, place a stage of the Walk of Peace in context, travel by various types of bicycle or view the village from the perspective of its historic church.

Hiking between Gabria and the Slovenian border

CAI Trail 079 begins in Upper Gabria at an elevation of 40 metres. From there, it runs along the Vipava towards the Slovenian border.

Another option is stage 9IT of the Walk of Peace. It passes through Lower Gabria/Dolenje Gabrje and Upper Gabria/Gorenje Gabrje before joining CAI Trail 71 towards San Michele del Carso/Vrh. Thus, both parts of the village appear within one continuous stage, while CAI Trail 079 follows its own route along the Vipava.

Cycling routes with different levels of difficulty

There are also several documented points of access for exploring the area by bicycle. After crossing the Isonzo, the “Anelli del fiume Isonzo” cycling loop (R062) continues towards Peteano and Gabria. Mountain bikes, trekking bikes, gravel bikes and all types of e-bikes are intended for this loop. Road bikes and city bikes, on the other hand, are not suitable for it.

The “Monte San Michele - Carso 2014+” MTB route begins in Gabria at the car park of the “Da Tommaso” restaurant. This specific detail distinguishes the starting point from those of the hiking routes mentioned and makes it clear that Gabria is part of both a longer cycling loop and an independent MTB route.

Karst landscape and views

The villages of Rupa, Peci and Gabria, which are part of the Karst landscape, offer numerous walking paths and tours through green countryside. From Gabria, there are views over the valleys of the Isonzo and the Vipava. The landscape and views therefore do not represent a single attraction, but shape the orientation between walking paths, tours and the routes mentioned above.

The Church of Gabria

The Church of Gabria is a separate cultural point of reference. It is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, Bishop. The earliest recorded mention of the church comes from Count Bartolomeo da Porcia, who visited it on 2 May 1570. According to reports by twentieth-century parish priests, the church was rebuilt in the eighteenth century. The dates therefore belong to different phases of its documented history: 1570 is associated with Count Bartolomeo da Porcia’s visit, while the rebuilding is attributed to the eighteenth century.
