Cultural history between churches, villas and memorial architecture

The Santa Maria della Vittoria building complex, including its bell tower and church square, is classified in the official cultural heritage catalogue as 20th-century architecture. The foundation stone of the church was laid in 1934; it was completed the following year. The design was created by architect Fausto Scudo. By episcopal decree dated 7 October 1949, Santa Maria della Vittoria was elevated to the status of a Marian shrine. These individual details make the complex a vivid example of how architectural history, religious significance and local memory come together in one place.

Another form of commemoration is represented by the Arco monumentale ai caduti della Grande Guerra. Designed by Venetian architect Domenico Rupolo, the triumphal arch is 20 metres high and built from Montello conglomerate. Inside, two memorial plaques bear the names of 40 soldiers who died in the First World War. At Villa Gasparini Loredan in Venegazzù, a district of Volpago del Montello, the focus is instead on historic villa architecture. Marcantonio Spineda de’ Cattaneis commissioned the villa from architect Giovanni Miazzi around 1770. The complex consists of a central Palladian main building, two lateral barchesse and an adjoining aristocratic chapel.

Ca’ Bressa also leads into an earlier era. The 15th-century building complex is located on Via S. Carlo, an old route connecting Bosco Montello and Treviso. During restoration work completed in 2021, extensive fragments of 14th-century interior frescoes were uncovered. Today, Ca’ Bressa is used as a public library. Medieval building fabric, rediscovered frescoes and a present-day public function thus stand side by side at this site.

Wine, regional products and insights into agriculture

Barchessa Loredan is a historic 15th-century building in Selva. Guided tours of the vineyards and wine cellar are available by reservation. The tour also includes a tasting of the wines produced there. If you would like to experience the region’s character not only through its buildings but also through its agricultural products, Agriturismo Basei complements this offering with cured meats, preserves, baked goods and wines produced and sold there.

Apicoltura Marcon offers an unusual perspective on food production. The “La Casa delle Api” exhibition allows visitors to see a natural bee colony live and learn about the social organisation of bees. Since 2017, in the “Casa del profumo dell’alveare”, you can experience the characteristic smell of a bee colony and observe the queen and dancing bees up close in the honeycomb. Both offerings make beekeeping immediately understandable through seeing, smelling and observing.

Experiences for families and groups

For children, Nino il Contadino offers direct contact with nature and farm animals. Educational workshops for children are also available. I Frutti del Montello is registered as an educational farm in the directories of the Veneto region and welcomes schools as well as adult and children’s groups. Extra virgin olive oil, Montello potatoes, honey and stone-ground soft-wheat flour are produced there. The experiences on offer are connected with the region and the products made there. This means that a stay can also be shaped around specific production processes and agricultural topics, without limiting the trip to classic sights.

The Montello as a scenic setting

The Montello area is characterised by karst sinkholes, caves and springs.
