Susegana brings together medieval castle history, ecclesiastical art, and trails through a green landscape within a compact area. If you are looking for a place in Veneto with historic sites and clearly distinct walking routes, the estates of Collalto and San Salvatore in particular lead to the defining themes of the area.

Churches, Castles and Venetian Art

San Daniele della Vigna is considered the first parish church of Susegana. It was built on Colle di San Daniele. A fragment of a Madonna and Child remains from its original decoration; it is dated to 1480 and attributed to Mattia de la Barovera. The small surviving section of the image thus represents a specific trace of the area's older history that has been passed down to the present day.

The Castello di Collalto reveals another historical layer: from 1461, it housed a Franciscan monastery. Today, however, little remains of the castle and its walls. On Collalto Hill, overlooking the Piave, the construction of a first fortified center is dated to 1110; this date, however, is not securely documented. For your orientation, it is therefore important to distinguish between the traditional historical date and what is visible today.

The Castello di San Salvatore complex includes an 18th-century Venetian-style palace. Works by important Venetian masters are located there. Together with Collalto and San Daniele della Vigna, this does not form a single type of castle, but rather a succession of ecclesiastical heritage, fortified history, and Venetian architectural and artistic tradition.

Walks between Collalto and San Salvatore

The “Sul cammino dei castelli” footpath passes the Castello di Collalto and the Castello di S. Salvatore. It runs through a green, car-free landscape. If you would like to connect the two castles via a longer route, the Passeggiata dei Collalto is the longer connection: it is 12.8 kilometers long, with a walking time of four hours.

The Passeggiata dei Collalto begins at the parking lot on Via Strada di Collalto, next to the primary schools of Collalto. From there, it leads through pastures, vineyards, and forests to the Castello di San Salvatore in Susegana. The landscape between the historic destinations is therefore an essential part of the route.

On Colle della Tombola, two trenches and an observation post in a cave have been cleared. Walks to First World War sites located on the private property of the Collalto family are being planned there. These excursions should therefore be understood as a planned initiative, not as an already established ongoing offering.

Festivals and Regional Tastings

The Festeggiamenti di San Giorgio festival in Collalto takes place during the last ten days of April. The program includes dance evenings, cultural evenings, and gastronomic events. Spiedo is the festival's main dish. The date and the mix of activities make the event an independent cultural point of reference alongside the historic sites and walking routes.

Another culinary event is called “Hiking tra le vigne del Castello.” It is an itinerant tasting experience between nature and history at the foot of Castello di San Salvatore. The focus is therefore not on a single building, but on the combination of vineyards, history, and a tasting experience along the surrounding area.
