Vidor combines evidence of medieval history with paths along the Piave and through the vineyard slopes of Colbertaldo. If you would like to choose a place in Veneto based on specific sights and routes, you will find both religious buildings and historic sites as well as landscape-oriented paths here.

History at Santa Bona Abbey

An important historical landmark is the Benedictine Abbey of Santa Bona. It was founded between 1107 and 1110 by Giovanni Gravone of Vidor. The reason was to house relics of Saint Bona, which he had brought from the Holy Land after the First Crusade. The church of the Benedictine Abbey of Santa Bona retains a simple layout characteristic of the local Romanesque style. Its façade also features Late Gothic decorative elements. The oratory contains a 13th-century fresco of Saint Christopher.

Another historic site is the present-day Castello - Monumento ossario di Vidor complex. It was built in 1925 on the site of the former medieval castle and designed by the Venetian architect Brenno Del Giudice. The area can be reached via a path starting from Vidor town centre and lined with the Stations of the Cross. The “Palio di Vidor” takes place every year along the road to the ossuary. The event reenacts the numerous attacks on the medieval fortress.

The local architectural history also includes the Chiesetta di San Francesco di Bosco. The small church is particularly valued by the local population and over the years became a focal point in the town’s urban development. Vidor therefore brings together different historical landmarks: a Benedictine abbey with Romanesque and Late Gothic elements, a memorial complex built in 1925 on the site of a medieval castle, and a small church that played a role in the town’s development.

Hiking Trail from the Piave into the Vineyards

The “Percorso dal Sacro al Prosecco” begins in the car park opposite Vidor’s parish church on Via Piave. The hiking trail follows the Piave to Santa Bona Abbey and then continues along small roads and paths through the hills and vineyards to Col Castello, with its Chiesa Monumento. The route is 9 km long and takes approximately 3 hours. Its course therefore combines religious sites, the river landscape and the vineyard landscape in one continuous route.

Cycling Route and Colbertaldo

For orientation by bicycle, the “La Via delle Colline” route is a good option. It connects historical, religious, ecological and food-and-wine attractions with the “La Piave” cycle path. Its route follows farm tracks, paths, as well as paved and gravel roads. The cycling route passes through the municipalities of Valdobbiadene, Vidor and Farra di Soligo, giving it a different focus from the locally situated hiking trail through Vidor.

The landscape also includes the hills of Colbertaldo in Vidor. They are characterised by vineyard slopes and offer impressive views of nature. The hamlet also has an ancient history linked to the Colbertaldo family. The family owned a castle built before the 11th century. In 1200, it was destroyed by the Trevisani to prevent Ezzelino III da Romano from using it.
