When you choose Collalto as a travel destination, you discover a place whose character is shaped by fortified levels, a church with significant works of art, and paths through the former fief of the lords of Collalto. The various options are suitable for independent exploration: you can observe the traces of Castello di Collalto, discover the Chiesa di San Giorgio, or take a walk through the medieval village and along the walls of the ruined castle.

Castello di Collalto and its visible traces

Castello di Collalto developed across three fortified levels surrounded by walls. The traces of these levels are still clearly visible today and give the place a distinctly recognizable historical structure. Despite the lack of reliable documentation, the origins of Castello di Collalto are dated to 1110. This refers to the creation of an initial fortified center on the hill overlooking the Piave.

The surviving structures include the Torre magna. It was maintained and restored by the Collalto family in recent years. As a result, alongside the still-visible wall structures, a specifically named tower is also at the center of the area's history. Those interested in Collalto's architectural development will therefore find several different points of reference here: the three fortified levels, the traces of the walls, and the Torre magna.

Chiesa di San Giorgio

Today's Chiesa di San Giorgio was built in 1927 based on a design by the architect Domenico Rupolo. The church houses the relic of the “Sacre Spine”; it also contains relics of Blessed Giuliana di Collalto. Its furnishings include two 17th-century wooden statues and an altarpiece created by Guido Pini. It depicts Saint George slaying the dragon. The present-day church from 1927 thus stands in contrast to the origin of the fortified center, dated to 1110 despite uncertain documentation.

Trails, views and orientation

The Visite guidate a Collalto include a forest trail, ruined walls and a tower overlooking the plain. The program also includes a walk based on the legend of Bianca di Collalto through the medieval village and along the walls of the ruined castle. Another option is Il Feudo dei Collalto, a trail through the former fiefdom of the lords of Collalto that can also be explored on foot. The three options focus on different aspects: the forest trail and the walls are part of the visit described, the walk draws on the legend of Bianca di Collalto, while Il Feudo dei Collalto opens up the former fiefdom as a walking route.

Events and local traditions

The Festeggiamenti di San Giorgio begin in Collalto on April 23 with a Mass in honor of Saint George. The Festeggiamenti also include cultural evenings and gastronomic events featuring spit-roasted meat, known in Italian as spiedo. The Mostra mercato di Collalto was renewed in 2003. The two references show different sides of the place: here, the feast day with its religious, cultural and gastronomic program takes center stage, while there, the renewed market event is the focus.
